Does anyone else find this to be an absolute beating?!

I know the guy is intelligent, it's just hard for me to get through his videos!

Maybe I should stick to reading his books?

There is no diminishing his genius and contributions to making power. But yes his age is hampering his ability to communicate things.

Agreed they're very difficult to watch. I've had the same struggle.

Not only age but I am pretty sure overall health issues haven't helped.

Folks say he had migraine headaches his whole life, and back in 2019 unknowingly had what the medical community refers to as a "sentinel" headache.
His severe headache lasted roughly 12 days, then he ended up hospitalized for emergency surgery for a brain aneurysm.

They saved him, but when a person comes back from that kind of medical event... sometimes, they aren't exactly the same person.

This is something I have some limited experience with, that I wish I did not.
My Mom had a similar health problem but overall a worse experience due to lasting damage afterwards.
If my Mom made videos, I am pretty sure they would also be very difficult to watch.

I tried watching some of them to learn what I could. Sadly, I was able to see he was struggling. It was disappointing but a tip of the hat to him for trying to share his knowledge on an open and free platform.

I have read all his books, I watch his videos because it adds context to his writing and he puts in a little more than what the text conveys. Yes he talks too slow now and his speech seems deliberate, but the knowledge in those videos is worth the time. When guys like that are gone, they are gone forever, thank him for putting in the effort to make that knowledge basically forever on the internet.

I am very sorry to hear that David Vizard may be suffering from health problems.

It is very admirable that he always had a dedication to sharing knowledge.

My now fuzzy memory brings up his info on
“how much quench gets 90% of the benefit”
“how low does exhaust backpressure need to be to get most benefit”
and
Colortune sparkplugs are neat to play around with,
bring back warm memories.

As a former owner of a Ford 260 V8 the memory that pops up strongest
is his amusing descriptions of bolting the tiny combustion chamber 260 heads on bigger displacements
and then trying tricks to live with such high static compression ratio.
He freely admitted he knew so little back then, but enjoyed learning through “breaking stuff”.

Yes, DV is old
Yes, DV has had serious health issues
And... the person who films and "edits" his videos does a horrible job and makes it worse than it needs to be

I still have all of the DV books I've purchased in the last 20+ years and I've watched a good number of those vids, although some are extremely difficult to sit through. That's a shame, if only because DV is taking the time to present a lot of info and IMO the message doesn't always get through clearly.

I've actually met David a few times over lunch through a mutual friend. He seems much more dynamic in person. Yes it's unfortunate his videos don't really "flow" so I find them hard to focus on and listen to....even though I am interested in the topic.

FWIW IMO he still talks way too much about the 350 Chevys he built back in the 80's....we've already read his book on those.

I did learn quite a bit from him though.....particularly how important the role Air/Fuel MASS and velocity is in terms of cylinder filling, particularly when the when a long duration intake cam lobe carries wayyy past BDC and the piston is coming back UP the bore.

He's a fascinating guy to talk to, i like heavy theory and he's super knowledgeable and it's especially best when you frame the questions to his liking.

Why the hell do his videos need background music ?!?! Which TOTALLY dominates the right channel.

I've heard and read about him on here and maybe some other places, I have never read or seen car or engine article by him. shruggy
Who does he work for now and in the past confused
I hope he is better than most of the writers I've read articles in Hot Rod, Car Craft, Popular Hot Rodding and especially the magazines from back east down

I am going to say this as a general comment not directed toward any individual post.

DV is doing us all a favor to share his wealth of knowledge with us. I highly doubt the few pennies made from each video are worth the time and effort put in to each one.

I have nothing but gratitude and thanks for anything he decides to share with us. I have personally learned a lot and enjoy watching and learning.

Videos don't require a hollywood production in order to be informative.

A lot of that is straight up poor editing and set up. His videos would be a lot better if he had an exhibit in front of him along with a pointer or even a white board. Anyone, I dont care who it is, just sitting there talking is going to be hard to watch. Another one with terrible editing is nicks garage. Its like they shoot each thing 3 times, but instead of picking one, they use them all. Exactly. Why would you want to just throw all the answers away? Just watch the vids at 1.5X speed.

Could it be most of us are so used to, spoiled by all that is at our fingertips? Everything is fast paced, get to the point quickly, flashy, high production values and efforts to keep viewers engaged. The guy is an encyclopedia of knowledge, and existed long before YouTube and the internet. He’s old. It is what it is. Grab a big cup of coffee in the early morning, sit back and pay attention. There’s a time to watch and learn and a time for all that other style of delivery. No different take on say listening/watching someone like Ed Iskenderian. IMO

I own many of David's books, and have always managed to learn something from them.

Not so much from his video's, a lot of re-hash of old info. But it is not too bad if you view them at 2x speed.

I enjoy watching them, just to learn as much as I can.

Adjusting the playback speed can help if the slower pace bothers you. I use that feature all the time on YouTube.

Have not read any of his books, but did watch a video he did about crankshaft design last night and learned something.
