Brian here is one I use on dyno at Riders: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail...mp;autoview=sku

MSD #8991 Self Powered....

It reads dead on against my older Craftsman non dial back that I use at the shop. I have seen some variation in readings between other lights before, especially dial backs....

I just set timing on an alum 360" W9 dirt motor a few weeks ago at a guys shop & did not bring my light.... had to use the owners MAC Dial back & it was not happy operating at low engine speeds with the MSD. Mostly it would'nt light, & then when it would it was giving off double signals etc. At higher RPM it worked "so so" Never had those issues with the non Dial back stuff.

If I was buying a new one today it would be the MSD after using it & about 10 other brands including snap on/mac/flaming river/craftsman in past 5+ years, I like it best.

Just bought the one off of e-bay for right at $110 shipped. I am 99.9% sure it is the same one that is rebranded MSD for twice the cost. It sure does pay to search around.

I have always used the MSD unit with no problems.

I'm surprised you are having trouble with the Flaming River timing light as well. I have been using one for 3-4 years without any trouble at all. Cheap and simple, and never a performance issue with multi spark ignitions. Mine gets used a lot, and has never been babied.

I agree with others that say check it for a broken connection before tossing it.

The light on the bottom of the page is the one I am testing out.
3 year warranty
RPM and dial back I like these features.
The cables are easily replaced with a simple screw fitting.

I still use a non dial back Sears Penske light that is older than many of the people on this forum. One of the magnets finally fell out of the inductive pickup and it still works fine.

But I think that one on the bay is probably exactly the same as MSD's and a heck of a deal. Now if I could just justify replacing my old junk that still works perfectly. Maybe I could burn the wires on the headers or get them caught in the fan. lol

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.
