With so many of the local "speed emporiums" in this region having gone out of business, I was curious if any (semi?)locals know where N2O refills are available. Searching online, surprisingly, isn't getting any hits for me. Thx

I used to do it.

The local guys stropped fooling with it in their street cars when the states decided to make it a capital offense to have a nitrous bottle in your car, and the cops acted like they were looking for drug smugglers and jacked them up looking for it.

Serious racers have their own stuff.

I'd work late at night, guys knew it, and they'd swing in to get bottles filled at 2AM when they were busy street racing. The good ol' days.

Never occurred to me to even look before today. Per Commonwealth of Virginia:

§ 46.2-1088.4. Devices used to supply nitrous oxide to the engines of motor vehicles.
It shall be unlawful for any person to operate any motor vehicle on the highways of the Commonwealth if such vehicle is equipped with any device that supplies the vehicle's engine with nitrous oxide, unless the device has been disabled such that the supply of nitrous oxide is disconnected and not readily accessible to the source of delivery.

Violation of any provision of this section shall constitute a Class 3 misdemeanor.

2004, c. 282.

And: Class 3 and 4 misdemeanors, the least serious misdemeanors, are punishable by fines, but no jail time. A Class 3 misdemeanor is punishable by a fine of up to $500.

Sounds simple to me: leave the hose off on the street... unless you're racing for more than $500

Maryland as of 2019:

(b) Except as provided in subsection (c) of this section, a person may not operate on a highway a motor vehicle equipped with a power booster system.

(c) A person may operate on a highway a motor vehicle equipped with a power booster if:

(1) The vehicle is enroute to or from a track where the vehicle is used for racing and the power booster system is inoperative; or

(2) The container of nitrous oxide has been removed from the vehicle.

(d) Every motor vehicle equipped with a power booster system shall be identified with a decal that:

(1) Is a diamond shaped design consisting of the words “Compressed Gas D.O.T. No. 1070” in silver scotchlite letters 1 inch high on a black background with a silver scotchlite border;



$1000 fine. Cops had a heyday for awhile.

And twirly whirlies to get there early and prochargers became fashionable too.

^^^ doesn't even match the commercially available decals for compressed, non-flammable, gas... effing MD officials making their own rules.

Glad I don't live there (although I was born there), but I still race more in MD than anywhere given where the tracks are near me.

Not sure which part of md your in but Scotts Speed shop in hagerstown, Maryland performance center in frederick. I can fill them but I'm in garrett county about as far west as you can get in md.

I'm hearing N2O refills might be available in Manassas, VA, about 45 min's from me. You mentioned Md. Performance Ctr in Frederick, probably an hour drive for me w/o traffic. Nothing close any more; those shops are long gone...
