Is there any problem with replacing the standard 158 T-3 2cp bulb with a higher candle power 168 T-3 3cp ? I just want my dash lights a little brighter.

I upgraded to LED's and it took a few different tries to find ones that I could dim without problem and would be right color (green) for my '89 Diplomat. My picture is not the clearest because my iphone is old but these have worked out great. I still use the factory covers over bulb, can dim without problem, and they look very original just brighter. Picture doesn't do them justice. The factory bulbs were 168 peanut bulb.

Here's a picture during day. Maybe you can tell better. Old ones wouldn't even be visible during day!

It looks great. Not sure if an LED bulb would work with an older car without getting too involved. I'm looking for a simple bulb swap. In it's self , will a challenge for a 70 year old crawling under the dash. If the 168's will work, then that's the way I'd like to go. Just need to know if I should expect any problem in doing so. Thanks for the input though. Pass on the LED numbers just in case I go that route.

Isn't the 194 a brighter version of the 168? If you're going to use the 168 might as well us the 194. But I think this LED bulb still might work if you have a basic Mopar printed board like this.

You might want to look closely at the headlight switches dimmer, make sure it is sending the max voltage to the dash bulbs first twocents scope
Second thing is to have your eyes check by a good eye Dr. up work

. LOL, my eyes are okay. Also, my dimmer switch is good. I do have the 194’s in now. They are a 2cp along with the 158’s. I don’t know what the difference is?

I put LED in my F body dash. They worked great. No other changes. I think these were the ones but not positive on which ones I ended up using as it has been a while since i put them in.. https://www.superbrightleds.com/194-led-bulb-cob-led-t3-25-miniature-wedge-base-135-lumens

The 168 bulb is very slightly brighter than a 194 bulb, but if U want brightness consider going to LEDs..

Just my $0.02.... wink

Did you by chance try the blue variety?

I did not because I wanted mine to look stock, which is the green. First I tried white. That was a mistake because it had a washed out silvery look, even with the little covers that go over bulb (factory). Then I bought the green ones that I posted the link for and they are perfect. As I wrote, unlike some others they will dim fine. They have polarity so just need to flip them if they don't work one way.

I also installed superbright LED's in my 1970 Monte dash. They do dim, but not as smooth as standard bulbs. I've heard some LED's are polarity sensitive and must be installed a certain way or they won't work. If that happens, flip them 180 degrees. All the one's I installed worked the first time. I had a socket that was easy to get to so I installed the bulb in the socket and tested it before reaching up and installing it where it went. I have green in the dash, red bulb for the brake light, blue for the hi beam indicator, and white in a dash one I think.

I'm not familiar with a Diplomat instrument cluster. Are the bulb covers green or blue? The cluster from my Roadrunner looks like the covers are blue.

The covers look kind of blue-ish but display green

Thanks for the info. This is something I've been seriously considering just because changing instrument cluster bulbs are such a pain.

I read on Superbright LED's website the color of the bulb should match the color of the lens. So brakes should be red, front marker should be amber, dash blinkers should be green, etc.

Yeah, I wanted to for long time but hesitated. Then I got some bulbs that wouldn't dim, threw them away. Tried the white ones and they washed it out and looked like crap. I thought the white ones were right because stock ones were white. Nope. The ones I linked finally were perfect. up
