I need help finding out what gears I have in my rear end. I read that you can find out what you have by decoding the fender tag. Can someone be kind enough to help me do this or tell me how to do it? Vin # WH23 G3A 256960 Fender: 09136 257341 031 981063 P31 26 (not sure if its a 2, there is a screw going through the first number. Looks like a 2) G11 V1W U H51 GK6 C2Y4 JY6 601 322094 E44 D34 WH23 C3A 256960 Thanks, Paul ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beer.gif)

Decode, tag,....dosen't matter as they may have been changed out over the years raise the rear of the car, both wheels off the ground, put a mark on the driveshaft, mark the tire, now rotate the tire one full revolution, count how many times the shaft turns,......Example, if you have an 8 3/4 rear, and the shaft turns 3 1/4 turns, you have 3.23's, if it turns 3 1/2 turns you have 3.55's, almost 4 turns, you have 3.91's....assuming you have factory gearing,....identify the type of axle you have, and the factory gear offerings, then start spinning your wheels ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drive.gif)

Look for a tag on the rear end. Metal stamped with the gear ratio. Hopefully it is still there. What rear is it?
8 1/4"

Dayclona is partially correct. The tag doesn't mean squat---someone may have changed the gears, but you must determine if you have limited slip.
Jack up one wheel and make ABSOLUTELY sure the car is in neutral, front wheels blocked. Try to turn the one wheel. If you can turn it you do NOT have limited slip. Watch the driveshaft and turn the wheel TWO that's right TWO turns and count driveshaft revs. It will turn whatever the ratio is, that is, if you have 3.55, it will turn 3 1/2 turns
If you CANNOT turn the one jacked wheel, then you have limited slip. so now, jack up BOTH rear wheels and turn one wheel ONLY ONE turn while watching the driveshaft.

Dayclona, 440sixpack, I will try what you said tomorrow. If I stay outside working on the car any longer my girl is going to kill me ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smilie_help.gif)

2.76 would be correct for a 7.25 or 8.75 axle. This is a 8.25 so it has 2.71s. The axle assembly code is 981.
But, as stated above, that only tells us what it came with, not what it has now.
my bad,,, my brain ratio if off today
I am truckless..
