I have a 2016 Ram 1500 5.7 with the A88HP70 transmission. It as just over 100K miles on it. I am towing a 24 foot trailer that weighs in at around 7200-7300 lbs. According to the chart I found, the max trailer weight rating for my configuration is 7780 lbs. The truck tows this trailer fine, but I am concerned about long term impact to the transmission. I have a load balancing hitch, and I am looking at upgrading the trans cooler and possibly putting air bags on the truck. Of course the fuel mileage goes from 18 MPG to about 9 MPG, but I am ok with that as long as I am not putting the truck at significant risk. I always tow in Tow mode.
I only tow about 4-6 times per year and typically it is about a 200 mile round trip.
What is a good temp range for the transmission? I watch the temp while towing and see it ranges from 192-196. Is this too high?
What else should I do to the truck and or trailer to help preserve the health of the truck?

So if I am running around 195 towing should I be concerned or is that normal? Would adding a trans cooler be better or not? If it gets my temps down is that better or not, since I have read they are actually designed to get to 190 as quickly as possible as this is where they run best.
My truck recently had a ,message on the screen saying to have the transmission serviced and not to shift until I got home, however, at the shop they could not replicate it. They think I have a ground issue, but it scared me enough to consider adding an auxiliary cooler. These are actually fairly inexpensive ($100-$400 depending on style) compared to a new transmission!

Which tranny fluid are you using in it and how often do you change it and the internal filter? as far as the tranny fluid temps most older vehicle that i have install a temp gauge in run to cold, below 160 F I like to see 160 to 250 F on a really hot summer day in the Mojave desert climbing the 17 mile long Baker grade going from 800 Ft above sea level to over 4400 Ft above sea level between L.A. and Las Vegas around 3:00 PM in August towing a 24 Ft enclose car trailer weighing around 8600 lbs. on the dual 5200 Lb.axles Most non synthetic ATF have a dye in them that will start to turn from red to brown around 275F and will be black at or above 325 F Once it turns black you need to have the tranny serviced with the filter and fluid changed and have the bands adjusted

What else should I do to the truck and or trailer to help preserve the health of the truck? I have an 07 2500 5.9 with 315k on the original trans. Secret for hem living is a regular service that includes dropping the pan. The trans runs around 195 on a warm day. When Ipull my 24 ft enclosed with a load I average about 205 and pulling any of the grades around here it will get up to 220 fora short period of time. The truck warning light has never turned on.

That is correct, it is the ZF8HP70. No transmission dip stick. If does seem they do not want you to get inside of the trans, and it is expensive to service.
