1967 R/T and when sitting for more than a few days , when starting in park, it would not go into drive or reverse very well. Putting it in neutral, while running, it would engage just like new. Rebuilt a newer BB727 and new converter. Swapped the valve body from the old to new trans. Issue is actually worse then before but going to neutral fixes the issue. The only common denominator is the valve body. Can this be the cause? Thanks in advance. Addition. I drove it for about 25 miles yesterday and when starting in park it didn't want to move. Worse than before as if I drove it daily or within a few days, there was no issue.

Some guys drill the valve body at the torque converter regulator valve and this will cause a more rapid converter drain. Warm it up and drive it, then verify the fluid level in neutral before shutting the engine off. Check the fluid level the next day before starting. If the fluid is very high on the stick then likely you have excessive drainback. Start it and once you get a good engagement check the fluid again, it should be much lower now. Excessive pump face clearance causes this as well.

Checked it when cold and stick was way over...started..ran...stick said 1/2 qt down. So CAN it be the valve body?

Sitting for a few days allows the converter to drain. The fluid doesn't pump in park so you need to start in neutral which does circulate the fluid. It's basically normal for that to happen. trans go makes a no yo yo kit to cure that. Used to be called morning sickness Will usually get a bit worse over a long period of time like 50K miles. I was told many years back that the condition was due to excess clearance between the converter and bushings. Maybe JK or Tman can confirm or deny that. Doesn't seem to bother anything as along as the neutral thing is done before dropping into gear as I drove my 66 wagon with it go over 50k miles. This was before the Trans go No Yo Yo Kit was out there or before I became aware of it. I believe they have incorporated the "fix" into all of their shift kits Feel free to correct me if I am in error

Or install a Transgo No Yo-Yo kit. I assume this cannot be installed with the tranny in the car?

Put the simple shift kit on so you do not get converter drain like you have now The member who posted above was on the money saying to do so.

Or install a Transgo No Yo-Yo kit. I assume this cannot be installed with the tranny in the car? Yes it can, pull the valve body and do it on the bench , re install the valvebody. The part you are replacing is the shift(manual) valve , it allows more fluid flow in park than the stock valve does.

There are no converter anti-drain back provisions in the Torqueflite, drain back is perfectly normal...as long as there is any clearance in the pump bushing, fluid will drain from the converter when sitting (or when idling for prolonged periods in Park). Of course, the more clearance, the quicker it will drain.
Much ado about this, but the cure is either starting in Neutral or installing the redesigned manual valve.
