Ok, I've done lots of research on doing a 5.7 swap into an E-Body. 12 years ago it was the plan, but unforeseen circumstances changed my priorities. Now I'm thinking about a little different direction. I just bought a 75 D100, Short box step side with lots of potential. It is a 4spd with what I believe to be a 318, but I don't know small blocks very well. My question is, what is a quick and simple explanation of what would be needed to drop a new style trans in it and leave the 318 in it. I do still have the 5.7 Hemi, so I probably wouldn't leave the 318 in it, but I was just curious. I might just decide to be a little weird. It comes naturally to me. Is it even worth it?

Is it a four speed manual presently? If it is and you have the pedals and you don't want to use the Hemi I would think about this. Find a low mile Magnum NV combo. A Magnum has a very similar hp and torque curve up to 3500 rpm which is perfect for a truck.Bolt right in.

It is currently a 4spd. I'm not married to the idea of a 4spd and would rather have an OD automatic. For a PU, I don't really care about power, that's what I have muscle cars for, but I do care about the looks and dependability. Not sure what the NV is.

NV stands for New Venture. Dodge and GM actually designed and built manual trannys together. Dodge need another OD manual to go behind the Cummins and I guess maybe GM needed another too. There are NV 4500's and NV3500's.

Hey Ledft, my friend and I are working at this, though it has taken a lot longer than we wanted. I am using LA318 in my 71 barracuda and my friend has a LA340 in his 73 challenger. We are both going to put in the HP70 8 speed. We both have a transmission to use. Neither of us have fitted it in the body yet to see what needs to be opened up. As far as hooking it up to the LA, it bolts right up. We are using the Quicktime -947 flexplate and getting a stock 15-20 bushing to use in the crank. The -947 plate bolts up to the LA crank but needs the torque converter mounting holes drilled in. Will be using the stock hemi starter too. That should take care of the main hardware, except for the custom driveshaft with some kind of slip joint. Now you need a controller for it, Sound German Automotive has them. You also need a couple of other electronic items: TPS, brake switch, and a RPM speed sensor. You can use the brake switch you probably already have. The speed sensor could be connected to a tach drive or something like that. A TPS can be purchased, even for a carb. Russel at Sound German can fill you in on the details as we haven't gotten that far. It will still be a while before we get anything going. If you are interested in doing this, there is a FB page too. Please send me a PM and we can keep up with each other's progress.

I remember reading something about a manual setup similar to a manual VB for the three speeds that uses a paddle shifter for this. Would do away with the need for all of additional electronics.

Mark, there is a guy who put the 8hp70 in his chevelle, he made a manual valve controller like you are talking about. Follow this link, about post #61 and he talks about what he did. https://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/threads/318-8-speed-swap.431245/page-3

Although I never did get to finish the project due to a flood event that had my car under 15' of water for three weeks, I was also in the process of a 5,7 and 5spd automatic transplant into a 71 Challenger. The trans tunnel was going to end up being stupid huge (I was ok with that) but the torsion bar cross member was going to need to be completely rebuilt. I didn't get to the cross member as that's when the flood hit us and then I had a house to rebuild, so the car got sold off.
