Not even a comparison, 09 destroyed the older one in power AND cost. 03-08 was $800 more for carb, intake, cam etc and only made 389hp / 401TQ. Eagle had a cam and a holley controller (new, controls everything, even the trans) made 457TQ / 498.5 HP. If shopping for a 3rd gen, get an 09+!!!!

Im not sure what kind of comparioson this is supposed to be, an early engine saddled with the crappy dual plane intake and a cam of what size ? VS a later engine with better intake and EFI...
Im confused but I would think a more meaningful comparison would be to stick a stock early motor with the factory EFI controled by holley VS an eagle engine controlled by holley, if your gonna saddle one down with a crappy intake do it to the other also.

That intake was more than the engine cost - the eagle has the long/short runner factory intake and the holley controls it. It would be a huge step backwards to carb an eagle. Even so, the old engine is 260cfm heads 9.5 cr, eagle is 330cfm 10.5cr....no comparison

that intake is a step backwards on the early engine, we know the eagle is gonna win so why did they hamstring the early one like that?

To show guys its better to grab an 09+ hemi than a cheaper earlier one, adding carb etc its actually more expensive and makes 100 less hp. Its literally like a 350 vs LS3 or something

Yes, the point of the episode wasn't to make them 'fair' but to show the difference in the 2 paths.
If you think you're going to end up ahead with a 'simple' and 'cheap' early hemi with a carb and msd6 - you're wrong.
Better to read, learn, and dive into the later model engines with efi.
Or just stick with an LA or BBM honestly. I don't see any reason at all to do the gen III carb thing personally.

Have a crate hemi 2003 . brand new. But buy the time you buy a late model do work to it .my understanding i can put on newer heads and cam and be there . Nothing is cheap.... doing a 6.4 in a 72 cuda... Parts, kits etc arent cheap. but why go back to a carb when you can have fuel injection?

HRD the comparison was to show the cost of the early v/s late model in a retrofit. Carbed old model was nearly as expensive as late model with Holley setup. Bucks down approach would be the early 5.7 with factory computer used, but they did not show that. Just my two cents but I would start with an eagle head motor and just wait to find a deal on one.

I get the comparison, but it was a bit disingenuous to not include the cost of a fuel system to run the EFI on the Eagle motor. If the point was for a dollars comparison to retrofit an older car this needed to be mentioned. This could easily add over a $1000 to the cost of the Eagle depending the direction you went.

I've been running the same 255 hanging off my frame rail of my street car feeding a turbo 383 since 2009.

Got to be more to your combo than you are letting on as lots of other people have tried this bucks down method and are plagued with "air in the fuel" problems usually rearing their heads after the tank gets down near 1/2 full or so (depending on lots of things), most people don't want to fill up every time they get down near 1/2 tank.

It's funny that you mention this as I'm having this exact issue. When I fuel injected the car I used an external Walbro pump with pre and post filters. Between that and the fittings and hardline I was about $300 into it. Sucks air while cornering and launching when under a 1/4 tank. I'm having a new tank built with baffles by a shop now. The cost of aluminum bumped the price quite a bit.

below a 1/4 tank if I punch it and actually get traction it will uncover the pickup yes. 1/2 tank is perfectly fine. Bigger C body tank and 4 corner CA emission vent system. I can run it to E in normal driving though I try not to. Pre and post filters.
