IMHO, I would try a .033-.035 shim. The drive side could be closer to the 'toe' on the drive side, which should bring your coast side more towards the middle of the tooth.

Okay, got it all buttoned up. About 18-19 in/lbs pinion turning torque.
Does 29-30 in/lb turning torque with the center section fully assembled sound right? I'm right at .006-.007" backlash.

Does 29-30 in/lb turning torque with the center section fully assembled sound right? I'm right at .006-.007" preload. Sounds about right for a 742 case but a 489 should have a little less pre load than that. I'm not sure why though Gus
