Is there a simple way to eliminate the impact shocks front and rear of a 74 Duster and still mount the bumpers?

My car 74 Duster mild 360/904/3.91 13.44/101.54 Son's car 75 Dart Sport 318/904/4.10 looking for a 360 or 408 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7 2010 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic B-5 6 speed 2010 Jeep SRT8 for the little wife

I don't know about an A-body, but on the E-bodies all you have to do is change to the earlier style brackets. That moves the bumper in closer to the body.

I did it on a 74 dart on the front.I used 73 bumper brackets and had to weld a nut in the frame rail for one of the bolts. The hole was there but there just wasn't anything for the bolt to thread into.Once I had the nut welded in it was a bolt on.Not sure on the rear though. Some 74's don't have the impact shocks in the front but I have yet to figure out why some did and some didn't.

I think it would be like I did on my 76 Duster. Check it out on the link below.

Hope this helps. I know I probably should add more pics and a better explanation but I am sure you will get the jest of it.

Re reading your post you were looking to eliminate them but this is a work around to that. I have not done the front yet but it looks like it will work the same way. That is this weekends project. Makes the car look way better, in my opinion anyways.

I suppose I could remove the impact shock and have someone fab some brackets to attach the bumper with. Has anyone done this with good results?

Very good job on the bezels. I looked into getting mine rechromed @ $115.00 each and I would have to paint the black trim. What type of paint did you use on the lenses?

I polished my chrome with 0000 steel wool. Very fine stuff. You can clean glass with it too. Then I used a kit from www.Eastwoodco.com

The paint is called Trim Black and it comes with a can of self etching primer. Both are spray cans. It takes a little patience waiting for the primer to cure but the black came out looking pretty good.

Here is a link to the product...

Collapse the shock absober inside the tube and the bumper'll be much closer to the body. That's the quick and dirty method.

If you're after weight savings on a race car, have something fabricated and go with fiberglass bumpers.

On a street car, any collapsing of the shock absorbers or removing of the bumper supports is a gamble, so do it at your own risk.

I'd love to pull the bumpers closer to the body on my Aspen, but I'd worry about the car being rear-ended with my daughter in the back seat. Not worth the risk for me.
