I recently moved to Idaho and need to register my Satellite and Cuda. Idaho has a Classic tag available and the rules are pretty much the same as Texas. While I drove my cars whenever it was nice out, not daily, I never once got pulled over by the Cops with any questions about whether I was following the restrictions of car show/parades, etc. I am wondering if this is not the case in Idaho and figured I would ask any Idaho residents on Moparts what their experience has shown. Also, the DMV site says that old ,correct year dated tags can be used EXCEPT for years 69-74 with no explanation why ??? anyone know why that would be? Thanks, Lee.

There was a guy at a swap meet here selling old plates year ago and I asked if he had any 1970 year plates and he said they never made such a thing. I believe he said from 68 thru mid 70 something they switched from re-stamping a new date on the plates each year over to using a dated sticker instead.

The classic car plates are cheap, but they don't want you daily driving with them obviously, and most people who do have them don't. If think if you have something clean and nice and are just driving it around on weekends during the summer they can't say anything even if your not taking it to a car show specifically. Everyone does it.

I never bothered with the Classic plates here in ID; the cars either get regular plates or personalized.
I don't think you can personalize the Classic plates, and IIRC the driving was restricted.
By the same token, up here at the northern end I don't think the cops have ever looked at my plates, let alone cared how much I was driving.

People used to get the classic plates to dodge the emissions testing as they used to test cars all the way back to 1964 model year in this area. Now hardly anyone daily drives old stuff so they changed the law to only test vehicles 80's and up.

You can't customize them and they only give you one. I've been pulled over by police for not having a front plate displayed on the vehicle even though they don't give you one when you buy the classic plates.

Emissions testing in ID ? Must be a Boise-area thing; we don't have that up here.

All of Ada and Canyon Country have to test their vehicles down here. Used to be just the Boise area, but they added Nampa and Caldwell a few years back.

Never been to Idaho. But I used to live in Ohio. I got Historical plates which allowed you to register model year plates. One time coming home late at night the flashing lights came on behind me. They accused me of having State Vehicle plates on my Barracuda. I said they are not and they (yes he actually called for backup) said yes they are because they are white with red letters. I explained to them that they are model year plates and 1970 Ohio plates are white with red letters. They both said they never heard of model year plates. I had to dig around in the trunk in the dark and find my historical plate and model year plate registration. They let me go but warned me that they would be checking my story the next day. They were not old enough to have ever seen a 1970 plate and I don't need this kind of crap so next day I hung the model year plate on the garage wall and put the Historical back on the car. When I moved to Tennessee I just got a regular plate.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

When I got pulled over the cop kept trying to tell me it was a state law that two plates had to be displayed at all times and whatever classic plate and registration card I had saying only one was not legit. He argued with me for quite awhile over it and then he went to back to his car and when he returned he said he had an emergency call to respond to and told me that I have been verbally warned and to get the front plate installed. You literally can't buy a front classic plate so obviously I wasn't able to do anything.

I don't want to give law enforcement any extra reason to pull me over. I think the specialty plates only attract their attention, and for the most part, the savings isn't worth the hassle they can cause. Its not my job to educate the cops about plates that are issued in their state. They understand regular plates like everyone else has.

I’ve been running collector plates for over thirty years, three different cars, rear plate only, Never a problem. One of the few things the DMV does right!

4 of my 7 current vehicles have never had a front plate attached, and it hasn't been a problem.
Only time it was, was in CA in the late '80s, and it was just a fix-it ticket that I beat with double-back tape.
I was NOT gonna drill my 911's front bumper.
When I had my Z28, I got a Z28I plate, made the I into a !, and a CHP officer noticed it at a show.
He just laughed, and in conversation didn't think it was a big deal.

I bought a Thunderbird with 20K miles in ‘93 that had no front plate. I got pulled over shortly afterward and got a warning ticket for going 63 in a 55 and no front plate. Then drove it with no front plate another 10 years and almost 180K miles without getting pulled over again.
Bought a Lincoln next and drove it with no front plate for 3 or 4 years before getting flagged at a seatbelt checkpoint and given a $25 no front plate ticket.
Then I got my ‘09 Challenger and didn’t even have 800 miles on it before a cop picked me off in heavy rush hour freeway traffic to give me a $75 no front plate ticket, pretty sure I was snagged for DWW (driving while white). Since then figured it wasn’t worth the hassle and have run a front plate.
I run a 1970 promotional repro plate on my ‘70 and a 1971 on my ‘71 and never been bothered, but it only takes one cop like the deputy who didn’t like middle aged white guys who drive showy cars who nailed me in my ‘09 that one day.
I’ve heard of a few guys getting tickets with antique plates not driving to and from shows and exhibitions which is what they are restricted to. I’ve yet to have a problem but if I get pulled over I probably will be driving to or home from a show, and if not I’ll lie, and hope for the best.
