Looking to put an overdrive on my 408 e body 3:91 but I want to keep my externaly balanced flex plate and my beloved
Lupo torque converter. I know that they have made non lock-up a518 for a couple of years but they are hard to find. Is it possible to convert a 46rh ton non lock-up 24 spline input shaft? If so, Is there an existing guideline of what needs to be done and can I re-use parts from my 727? BTW I am not interested in the gear vendor. Thanks.

Change the input shaft/rear clutch piston support and reaction shaft support at a minimum.

There are some differences at the back of the input shaft where it mates to the intermediate shaft compared to the 727 so you need to make sure you get a very late 727 for parts or find the 89-93 46RH for parts.

If you can’t find them PM me as I may have what you need.

if i remember right, 91/92 518's are non lockup.2 wire connector. i know my 91 is for sure. there was a 92 2 wire for sale close to me. not sure what he wanted for it.

a few years back, member Mr. P body [i think ?] did a build where he wanted to use a 727 converter in an A518 that was a lock up.
it was a pretty thorough parts breakdown on what to change out in the A518.
unfortunately, i couldn't begin to tell a guy how to find the thread, or even how many years ago it was.

1993 was the last year for non lockup 46. With the launch of the BR truck we went to lockup.

Thanks, I don't have a 46rh core yet, so you if I understand correctly you are saying that if I find a core from 89-93 it would be more interchangeable with my 727 parts? Not sure of my 727 year but probably arround 1974.

Thanks, Would be interested if it is still for sale but would require shipping to Canada.

Are you the same "Transman" that writes for the TDR [turbo diesel registry]?

The core 46rh you are looking for has a dual pin wiring plug. The lockup versions had three pins on the harness. Can't go just by the year.

The non lock-up units still pop up in the pick-a-part salvage yards. The last one I bought, the yard pulled for $175, all in. After a full rebuild, JV bell conversion, A&A forward manual valve body, and Ultimate Concepts converter, it is behind the Hemi in my Cuda. One of the best things I have ever done. Didn't take any surgery and works great with the Slapstick.

I didn't really consider the GearVendors due to the OD ratio. It is not nearly as advantageous as the 518.

i did the math one time, and all things considered, trans rebuild, driveshaft change, JW bell, converter, for an A518 against the same doings with a 727 with adding a gear vendors unit, and the A518 came out way ahead of the cost of the 727 plus a gear vendors unit.

I have a fresh 46rh I ended up not using. Small block pattern. Come with fresh converter. Monster transmission did the trans.
