Seen a few broken forged cranks, but never a cast one? My mates 70 R/T Charger was driving around with a totally sheared crank. It made a strange rattling noise but seemed OK? I’ve also seen a hemi Barton 572 crank in three pieces too. That didn’t run too good though... But some folks do run cast as they is lighter and are not prone to breakage. Where the limit is, we may never know. Too many steel cranks around for big blocks, unlike Ford guys... If you read about the 360 small block guys, they love ‘em lol... I saw a dropped valve 360 engine that was destroyed and the crank was fine...

i have a friend who was a ford racer and ford steel cranks are rare. He used cast cranks without issue but thought that limiting rpm was the key to longevity. i have noticed that some cast cranks have fillets, which is good, but mopar doesn't. A friends 460 cast crank broke at speed not a pretty sight. Everything, cam, rods, cam journals, the whole center of engine were in small pieces in the oil pan. 69 Mustang running 6.20s all steel, so he was making some heat.

So nobody has broken a cast 440 crank? Maybe we had it backwards all along and the cast one is better than the forged one. Using a cast crank just teaches you to tip toe. Plenty of stocker guys using them.

Mazzolini used to run a cast crank in his Super Stock car just to save some weight. That was a buzz saw of an engine. Personally I wouldn't do it but the NHRA guys are a little crazy. They would sell their mom into slavery for a tenth. Andy you exaggerate a bit there, .05 and their Mothers, sisters, daughters are gone!

Are they really cast steel or cast iron ? Inquiring minds............. True 100% cast iron is very soft compared to cast steel used for crankshafts. Now if it is a cast Eagle 360 crank it is cast out of playdough.
