I saw one of my forged steel 440 cranks broken on a press, it had spun a rod bearing and it was bent . The crank repair company put it in the press and was in the process of straightening it before working onit an BANG, it broke at one of main bearing to rod throws whiney
I did have a customer who had cast crank in a 454 Chevy 1 ton crew cab ranch truck break a crank in SO CA about 60 miles from home and drove it home and around 25 miles back into town to a repair shop, the shop brought me the motor to rebuild is how eI know it was broken and driven that way shruggy

Seen a few broken forged cranks, but never a cast one?

My mates 70 R/T Charger was driving around with a totally sheared crank.
It made a strange rattling noise but seemed OK?

I’ve also seen a hemi Barton 572 crank in three pieces too.
That didn’t run too good though... spank

But some folks do run cast as they is lighter and are not prone to breakage.
Where the limit is, we may never know.
Too many steel cranks around for big blocks, unlike Ford guys... fan

If you read about the 360 small block guys, they love ‘em lol... drive

I saw a dropped valve 360 engine that was destroyed and the crank was fine... drinking

There’s no point trying to fix stuff that ain’t broke,,, 'but if ain’t broke',,, you is not trying hard enough...

i have a friend who was a ford racer and ford steel cranks are rare. He used cast cranks without issue but thought that limiting rpm was the key to longevity. i have noticed that some cast cranks have fillets, which is good, but mopar doesn't.

On the scales just now, bathroom scale but high quality, each crank set in the same spot on scale twice.

Cast 440-67 pounds
Stock steel 440- 69 pounds
Stock Hemi been worked, out of a S/S 68 pounds
Kellogg Hemi with mallory 75 pounds
Ohio 4.15 73 pounds
Ohio 4.5 73-74 pounds
KB stock stroke blower crank 74 pounds

Have a 6 pac crank but was in garage and didn’t measure it (been internally balanced)
You numbers may come up different but they were all relative to each other

A friends 460 cast crank broke at speed not a pretty sight. Everything, cam, rods, cam journals, the whole center of engine were in small pieces in the oil pan. 69 Mustang running 6.20s all steel, so he was making some heat.

So nobody has broken a cast 440 crank?

Maybe we had it backwards all along and the cast one is better than the forged one. fan

Using a cast crank just teaches you to tip toe. Plenty of stocker guys using them.

Mazzolini used to run a cast crank in his Super Stock car just to save some weight. That was a buzz saw of an engine. Personally I wouldn't do it but the NHRA guys are a little crazy. They would sell their mom into slavery for a tenth.

Alright this is getting annoying...

The cast cranks are cast STEEL. All of the Mopar cranks are STEEL.

Vent over, carry on...

True 100% cast iron is very soft compared to cast steel used for crankshafts. Now if it is a cast Eagle 360 crank it is cast out of playdough.

The previous shortblock in my wife's 70 Barracuda had a cast crank. It held up fine to years of abuse, running 10s with Indy heads in a 70 Charger, and then mid to low 11's with 906 heads in the Barracuda. The crank is still fine, actually. It's the 1/3 of the LY rod from #7 that ended that shortblock. It exited out the side of the block and broke the starter off the bellhousing. grin
