I guess this sleeve/bearing? Needs to come out for auto transmission.
Any shade tree methods to get this out?

Update: Watched some YouTube videos of the bread method and reviews were so-so.
Spent $17 on puller from HF and the center sleeve came right out.
I'm guessing I also need to remove the larger bushing?
That doesn't look simple, there's no lip for a puller to grip, it actually feels like the bushing is sitting on a shelf that's larger diameter.
This is turning out harder than I'd expected, what now.

The method of removing a bronze bearing should work on that too….. get a good fitting dowel (I used a stack of washers on a bolt with nut and grinded it down to get the fit) pack cavity with wheel bearing grease, insert dowel, smack with hammer hard, hydraulic force will pop bearing out.

iagree Yup, a bit messy but as large as that roller pilot is (lots of area) it should pop out easily.

Grease is how I've always done it, but one of the TV car shows the used bread packed in the hole and said it doesn't make the mess grease does. shruggy

Ok, you got my attention, but need some more details, please.
What keeps the grease in? The inner surface of that hole is corrugated, has ridges.
So it would seem the dowel would need to match ridges.
How do I seal the opening so the grease doesn't squirt through?

Thx

If you use heavy grease (or bread) pack it in the center hole and use a tight/snug fitting dowel and hammer the dowel in, it pushes the bearing out.
A little may squeeze out around the dowel, but it shouldn't be that much.

Appreciate the info, I'm going to try the dowel and bread method.
I'll report back the results once I get a chance to run to HD for the dowel.

Thx

Use the grease rather than the bread. You won't regret it. As to stopping the grease from squirting out, you can't eliminate it. But you can control it with rags wrapped around the rod (dowel).

If you don't need to save it, weld a bolt to it and a slide hammer.

The bread theory did not work for me I welded a bolt to it and used slide hammer, 5 minutes later it was out

Thank you

Here’s a follow up for anyone dealing with this in the future.
I finally got the larger sleeve out, about 1 hour with a Dremel tool.
Luckily the large spacer is cast iron, but does have a thin steel spacer around outside.
No way hydraulic pressure would have removed this, it sits on a shelf, so no way to build pressure.
So don’t waste effort on the smaller inner bushing.
Unfortunately welding wasn’t an option, but this small project is finally done......
At this rate I’ll have this motor in the car by 2024 frown

Wow you really did that the hard way!

I just drill a tiny hole in the center of the edge, then a couple sizes bigger till it is almost the same diameter as the thickness of the ring and a smack on the side with a hammer and punch to shrink the diameter and they fall right out in 5 minutes from the time I start walking to the tool box to grab my tools.

I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

And if you had listened to those recommending the grease method, it'd come out in one piece. You have over a 3:1 area ratio and that puppy would have popped out like a greased pig at the fair.

Sorry, that’s not true, if you look at 2nd pic you’ll see the bushing sits on a shelf the same exact diameter.
Nothing for the grease to push on, welding a nut or cutting out is only option.

I'm just going to say one more thing and then I'll shut up. Did you try grease? If not then you do not know that it wouldn't have worked.

I tried the grease method on my Gen 3 hemi and it did not work, had to grind it out with a dremel tool.
