Give them one... Any one... pick a number... LOL

I do not give my SSN to anyone except when I am applying for a loan. Even when I go to the Dr's office I transpose a few numbers. Doctors do not need your SSN for medical treatment.

News to me. Something new? Been on FB for almost 10 yrs, my (now ex) wife had set it up for me. I have minimal personal info on there. While I've never sold a car on there, I have bought and sold plenty of other things from Market place with no issues. I just went to mine and looked around, I don't see anyplace that asks for that info. confused shruggy

Just got banned again yesterday for saying "Men ARE dogs" about that silly man running through a forest that looks like a dog. I am pretty much done with Farcebook, the excuse that they cannot talk with you because of Covid is total bull, everything they do can be done at home so TALK WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS! mad

Wasn’t there a thread recently about eBay now requiring sellers to give their SSN to them?
It’s getting to the point where someone who just wants to unload spare stuff or get rid of some clutter can’t sell online any longer due to the tax hassles.
For businesses selling online they already presumably are set up for taxes and have records of their purchases and sales revenues along with expenses so it is business as usual. For the guy who is just trying to sell some parts they’ve had gathering dust on a shelf for years, old toys, signs etc who knows how much they paid years ago or if they even came out ahead selling the stuff, so how do you calculate figures for tax purposes?
Back to the old days of selling at swap meets I guess. Though some of those venues require information for the tax authorities too I’ve heard.

The fact that people are selling parts to put money back into the system must not make any sense to the important people who run things.

Yup. One of my friends sells at Mopars in the Park as a private individual and Minnesota forced him to start collecting MN sales tax.

They do that here at the spring and fall swap meets held at the race track parking lot. They are required to tell you to fil out the tax forms, but a lot of people ignore it.

I've sold a few parts here and on another car enthusiast forum stating that paypal friends and family is the only online payment method I'll accept, and people have been OK with that. But soon I'm sure the IRS will put the squeeze on that method too.
I remember an episode of the old show Married with Children where Al and his neighbor Steve restore a Mustang, and in one scene they meet some shady character in a back alley to buy a mint ashtray for their project. Funny scene but sadly in the near future I'm afraid that is what it is going to come to when buying and selling vintage car parts! twocents

I share your sentiment, but that might cross into the area of "wire fraud" if online. A wrong SSN number match in a legit situation will eventually just flag you for more attention.

The collection of SSN's seems to focus on online entities that handle money, like eBay, PayPal, and whatever Facebook calls their payment service. I predict a rise in Craigslist popularity because they don't handle money; they only run ads, and probably won't require SSN's.

Valid point. up When I first read this I figured it was a scammer.

If facebook actually wants my SSN I will not give it to them even if that means I can't sell on there.

Too many places want your SSN and then people wonder why identity theft is a problem. shruggy

I must be a strange person but whenever I hear some one needs SSN number I think of the movie Coneheads.

I've sold a few things through FaceSpace, BUT, I did not take payment through them.

I could see that being the defining line between needing an SSN or not.

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

up haha

Myself I think there is going to be a huge backlash to Uncle joe's idea. I believe Sleazebay and the TPO's are going to take a huge hit. Hemmings might benefit from it whistling Someone is going to come up with a viable work around, UHH maybe MEXBAY or CANBAY , based outside the US so they don't have to comply? Dunno, but I was surprised Ebay, Paypal, Venmo and others did not have enough political clout to can this before it got passed. The bankers evidently did wink Could force a black market shruggy
