I see that Hughes used to offer a ported 302 casting head with a 2.050” intake valve, getting 298 cfm intake flow at .600” lift.

I’m looking at installing 2.020”/1.600” valves, max porting for a bracket race 360.

Anyone here have any personal experience porting the 302 heads to this level?

Any sections in the intake or exhaust ports to look out for that could risk hitting water?

No comments that I should be using 308,894,915 or another head, I am using these heads as the combustion chamber is superior to the other OE LA heads, and few mention it, but there is a hp advantage there.

Thanks

I put some old 1.88, 1.60 360 valves in a set with some port work and got 240 cfm out of them. My opinion would be I don't know how you could get a 2.02 or a 2.05 valve in there and shape the short turn right. It would be pushed back so far that I would be afraid of hitting water. That's moving the seat back .135 into the short turn. Second with all that valve curtain area the air speed at the pinch I would think would be crazy high. The 1.88 1.60 seem to go smoothly.I'll dig up some more info later.

My suspicion is that long before you get anywhere near 298cfm(legitimate cfm), you’ll find water.

Get a scrap head and start making chips.

Mine managed to go 240's with an 1.9 11/32 ferrea valve.

You will find water at the straight wall where it enters the bowl, if you go to far, and make sure they are not cracked i have had 5 sets all cracked accepted 1 pair

Bowl hog, good 5 angle seat and 1.88 intake. That's the cheapest bang for the buck.

Going to start with a 1.880” valve with a big throat and see how that goes.

The pushrod holes are .670”, so I’ll thick tube those and grind into them if/when the pinch becomes an issue, staying with straight rockers.

Looking forward to hearing how you progress through the job.
Port runner volumes at various stages(including untouched), as well as bowl and throat diameters, along with pinch sizing would be a plus.
And of course....... flow data if you’re up for sharing.

Happy grinding!! up

Here is what I found:

132 CC runner
1.60 below the seat
4 angle seat
82* bowl cut then blend
15* top cut with radius
Pinch opened to .850 x 2.0
stock 360 valves with heavy 30* back cut intake only

So that's 220 cfm from a port that's only 132 cc's?

Is that correct?

The part of the guide casting that connects the guide to the roof of the port could be removed as well.

That is what I did on my '596 heads and that netted a few extra CFMs.

Somewhat hard to tell all the details, but here are a few pics:

I put enough work into these that will end up thrown into the corner with a pile of other heads. I thought these went 240 with a 1.88 cut into them. Actually it was 204, so I tried to save face a little. 230 and I'm done lol. I put 2.02's into some 360 heads (974's) and got 250 with less work than these. What did your 360's go?

Take a look at this separate thread I had going on the subject of the work I did => HERE

In summary:

1) I started with:
LIFT I E

0.100 67 57
0.150 99 79
0.200 130 104
0.250 162 125
0.300 189 140
0.350 215 152
0.400 235 160
0.450 253 167
0.500 262 172
0.550 261 175
0.600 248 177

2) I ended up with:
LIFT - BEFORE - AFTER - %CHANGE

0.100 - 67 - 67 - 0
0.150 - 99 - 102 - 3
0.200 - 130 - 138 - 6
0.250 - 162 - 175 - 8
0.300 - 189 - 205 - 8
0.350 - 215 - 232 - 8
0.400 - 235 - 253 - 7
0.450 - 253 - 267 - 6
0.500 - 262 - 282 - 8
0.550 - 261 - 291 - 12
0.600 - 248 - 283 - 14

It was a great experience doign that work, I will be starting my W2 fairly soon next.
