I bought this old can at a swap meet that I think would work pretty good in my land speed car. I don't want to go all the way to Bonneville and risk failing tech.
Who is the go to guy for recertification?

I believe the part has to be sent to the original manufacturer for recertification.

You have to send it back to Lakewood in Iowa.

Call BNI or SCTA and ask them who they want you to have it recertify by twocents work
Talk to one of their safety techs, they are usually very helpful up

I tried finding a phone number for lakewood, but couldn't come up with it. I have heard that Tim Hyatt did re-certs, but he's gone now. I'll try checking with scta/bni tech for a referall.

Tim Hyatt was approved by Lakewood years before the Holley merger to modify and re-cert cans. I believe his son is still doing clutches and he may also be doing re-certs as well. Contact HRS I'm pretty sure Jeff know how to contact them.
Go to the UMTR site if you need a link because they were a sponsor for that site www.umtrnorth.com
Well I just checked my own link and the site is down.

Markz got it. You have to get to Lakewood through Holley. It doesn’t matter what any association says. It goes through Lakewood via Holley. It’s a pain in the ass because some third party does it, but you can’t get to the third party without going through Holley.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I would imagine Black Magic can do them. Call Browell or Trick if Lakewood provides the standard (no) response.

Lakewood is the only one who can recertify lakewood bellhousings via quicktime/ holley. The address is: 6674 189th street Albia, Iowa 52531. You can call Russ there and ask him for a work order number. 641-932-5050. I believe lakewood was upset that other manufacturers/companies were recertifying their bellhousings and they were losing revenue so they took the issue to the SFI foundation and changed who can recertify their products.

My guess is between the cost of recertification, cost of shipping both ways, and who knows how long it will take, you may as well buy a new can. Which is probably what they really want you to do anyway.

The way things have been going for me lately, they would probably say they laid off the guy that does recerts a year an a half ago and have a big stack that need done before mine.

The thought has crossed my mind. This is a really nice one, with a built in cross shaft for the throw out bearing, an rpm sensor, and extra depth for a small diameter triple disc clutch and flywheel, all of which I got in a package deal. So if I switch to a new, normal can, I'm starting from scratch on the clutch, too.

I wonder what's involved in the recertification process. Just a visual inspection? Strip and Magnaflux? Other NDI?

It’s worth it because it will look like brand new when you get it back. I had a window installed in mine and it was still only 400 bucks 4 years ago. It’s worth every penny for the window. I say do it.
