When I go to take my 68 GTX out, it takes a lot of cranking to start it after is sits for a day.
Acts like it doesn't have any fuel.
Fuel pump is new.
Fresh restoration.
What steps to identify issue?
Thanks

Before attempting to start for the first time after sitting, pop the hood, take the air cleaner of and work the throttle, see if it is squirting fuel inside the carb from the accelerator pump nozzles. Would be my first step.

The fuel very well may have evaporated during the cars non use time. Cranking the engine works the mechanical fuel pump and refills the float bowl/chamber of the carburetor.

I doubt sitting for one day would do that. My 51 will sit for 3-4 days and fire right up.

Now it might be getting real hot and basically boiling off the fuel at shut down, but I doubt it's just from sitting one day.

Today fuel evaporate very quickly so your carb. may be going dry overnight when shut off work
I see two choices to fix your issue, pour a small amount of gas in the carb before trying to start it or add a electric fuel pump so it will fill the carb up before starting it. scope

My AVS cars have all done that if the choke is inoperative, and if they sat/sit for a week or two regardless.
I just spin 'em for a few seconds and then give 'em a pump or two and they light off.
My Hemi car had an electric pump that I'd run for a few seconds - you could hear it slow down when the bowls got fuel - and then light it off.
I didn't run the choke on it, so a couple pumps on the pedal were needed.
Drag car - Holley DP - same thing as the Hemi car.

Seems that under 8 hours, no issue, they'll light off right away.
The above is since the early '80s; the ethanol hasn't seemed to affect that.

up

Step #1, check the choke operation. On a cold motor remove the air cleaner and move the throttle 1/4" or so. The choke should close and have a slight spring tension holding it closed.

Step #2. If the above is OK, check the ACC. pump shot by holding the choke open and exrcising the throttle. you should see two streams of fuel shooting into each primary bore.

Who did the resto?

Do you have at least the 3/8 inch or so spacer that used to come in the rebuild kits?

That made a huge difference in the starting of the last car I chased this problem down on. With just a thin paper gasket I’d get some longer cranking even on a hit start. That spacer got me quick light off and I could go about one week without much issue cold starting a car with no choke. Any longer and it was gas down the carb time. Electric pump would help the situation if you are up for that.

I want my fair share

I highly doubt fuel is evaporating. I let my car sit for weeks on end and there's still fuel in the carb(Holley DP) I run no choke either....couple pumps of the pedal and it fires right up. I'd be looking at the carb....OP didn't mention what carb he has.
