I bought new decals from Dodge Connection and now it's time to remove the old decals.

What's the best way to do this without screwing up the paint ? A heat gun and your fingernails ?

Honestly, I don't think you'll be able after 40+ years to remove the decals without damage the paint. Everything depending on the car storaging conditions along its life. Maybe some gasoline could help, but dunno

Start with a heat gun on low setting a PLASTIC RAZOR BLADE. Sounds like an oxymoron, but they make them. They have a blunt edge and won't scratch. Often you can get an edge started and slowly peel off a long strip. Be aware that although the eraser wheels work very well, they will burn through lacquer.

if the paint is original a strip eraser will work perfect.
take your time, keep the wheel speed down and keep it moving.

Yes, strip eraser is the best. But you can loosen it up with 3M adhesive remover then the wheel and a plastic scraper to help also. Do a google search for the remover and it will bring up the other tools needed. I used to remove/change decals on the doors of semi tractors and these are what I used. NEVER use a razor blade! BTW, there WILL be a shadow where the old decals were, but they make a perfect template to where the new ones go!

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

I agree on all points. This is the best way to do it.

watch using those plastic razor blades. while they have a somewhat blunt edge, they WILL dig into paint if you are not careful !
i learned that the hard way.
