I have a friend who is looking to buy an enclosed trailer for transporting very high-end sports cars cross country. He has a friend that is an established auto transporter and cannot keep up with the demand and wants to sub out to him the overflow. He already has a 1 ton Dodge diesel but is going to buy a new 4500 diesel flatbed for the primary. He has years of experience hauling a 35 foot travel trailer across the country so he is not a total novice. We have been discussing what to look for in a good trailer and I told him about all the stories on here about what to get in a trailer, like three axles for stability and braking, 16 " wheels and tires for better safety and tire life. He wants a gooseneck and was thinking about a 35 foot. I would like y'alls feedback on what brands are durable and well built, what options are needed,(Like a side door), The owner of the company has been using Sundowners and he gets about 3 years of heavy use out of them then sells them. They get a lot of constant use. My thoughts are that limiting to a 35 ft means one car at a time, most of these cars are approx 16 ft long, but I don't know enough about it, so I figured I would ask here. They frequently transport 2 at a time, so he might be hurting himself financially by going too small lengthwise. Any helpful advice would be appreciated as to what brand of trailer and why would be appreciated! Thanks, Lee.

35' seems like wasted space. Either go to a longer trailer to be able to haul 2 cars or go shorter to haul just 1. I would think being able to haul 2 cars at once would be better since he's transporting cars. My thoughts exactly.

Forget "budget" for a moment and crunch some numbers. What will expenses, revenue and profit be per year. This will dictate how much should be invested, not his "budget". It makes sense to buy the right stuff the first time even if you have to stretch yourself a little thin. The last thing any new business needs are breakdowns or the inability to provide a service because you don't have the right equipment. Consider a good used stacker as well as a 20' enclosed for those "one car" jobs.

I would get a 5th wheel camper with enough floor space for 2 cars, then gut it and make a hidden hinge system to open the back. You could fly under the radar screen at all the weigh stations and aviod the hours of service regs. Put a mattress over the 5th, and have a toilet and shower up in the front to keep it a legal RV.

With regards to using a goose neck. They haul better so IMHO they are the best chioce for extended trips and daily use. A 35/36 ft goose equates to a 28ft tag (usable floor space) at a minimum a 46-48 ft goose for mutiple car transportation. If this is going to be a car trasport only then it should be a pretty basic trailer with only the options required for vehicle security and ease of use, good interior lighting (above and below), access doors, winch, quality tie down anchors and straps, heavy axles and 16"min tire. etc...and if the budget allows an aluminum trailer (your getting paid to haul cars not a trailer) Thats my

If you go with a standard height trailer you have the standard wind drag.. on a stacker you have much higher wing drag,, he might give some thought on the front design of the trailer.. also consider the height based on the truck height, 4500s are taller than a 3500.. a 5th wheel is more stable thats part of the reason semis use them... I really look close to the frontal area of the trailer I build or buy... I pull this one with a 3500 2wd dually diesel 6 speed stick.. if I built a new one I would make the LQ much smaller and add a 3rd axle

All I am gonna ad is its pretty rare to hear someone say "I wish I had a smaller trailer"
"I am not ashamed to confess I am ignorant of what I do not know."
