My daughter's '61 Plymouth Savoy had a Briggs and Stratton universal ignition switch in it when we got it.

Freaking thing worked like a charm but looked goofy so I swapped it out with a real nice MOPAR unit out of a '64 D200 that was about to be crushed.

Now the car doesn't want to start in the morning unless I run a jumper wire from the hot post of the battery to the hot post of the coil.

The rest of the day the car starts so quickly it will actually startle you.......but the next morning you have to use the jumper again.

Car is running the original 225 slant six with points and condensor and less than 100k original.

Any thoughts? Thanks!!!

When the key is turned to Start, it bypasses the ballast resistor and provides 12v to the coil; just like you've discovered.

I'd find a wiring diagram and see if that's something that should be there, but isn't working, or if it's something you'll have to add.

If you ever find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Did the new sw have the same # of terminals as the old one? did you toss the old one? Can you get another original one(new or used)?

Id say the switch is going open when cold. Then after it starts its ok.He only jumps the coil first time. Most of the early switches were the same.Rocky
