I would say your first is arguably number one country song alltime. Number two I cannot go along with. I don't even think it's country. And especially not with guys like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Hank Jr. and Waylon Jennings.
I would say ray Stevens is more folk maybe? & it reminds me that I get him and Jim Stafford mixed up as they have a similar style of song writing IMHO. I sure dig Jim on wild wood weed, spiders & snakes, swamp witch Hattie though and IIRC Ray did the Mississippi Squirrel Revival ?
and then Jerry Clower comes to mind...LOL! Marcel Ledbetter then the guy who sing Ricky Tidwell's l momma is gonna play football is that Tim Wilson?
back to country I love RWH and snake farm. country blues, and Choctaw Bingo that one is a must hear.
and another great counrty legand with the Texmex crowd was ol Freddy Fender with Rancho El Grande, silver wings, before the next tear drop falls, after the fire is gone, ect..

Never been a fan of country music but now that I live in Tennessee, about 1/2 hour from the Birthplace of Country Music, finding anything else on the radio is kind of like fighting The Borg. Resistance is futile. Maybe it will grow on me. Probably not. I just leave the radio on the local Conservative talk radio station.
At one time Nashville had some great rock stations. WKDF 103 was one of them, if the conditions were right we could listen here in W. KY.

Yes Freddy Fender!!! I listed him a couple pages back. You know he join the USMC when he was 16!
Facts are stubborn things.

The Ray Stevens song I put in as a joke. I first heard that song as a kid in the back seat of my mom's station wagon in the early 70's. Thought it was the funniest song ever!
My daily driver doesn't have a CD player, Sirius radio, Bluetooth, or even power windows, air conditioning or seat belts...I digress.
So, luckily one the local radio stations (HANK FM) plays "country oldies" which I really like to listen to through my single speaker in the dash. From time to time they play my favorite country song ever which means that it has to be the best country song of all time, right?? He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones.
Can anyone convince me there’s one better?
That’s was my choice before I opened the thread. Close second is EL Paso, by Marty Robbins.
