i can't help you with the "correct" number for the stem. however, nothing irritates me more than guys that use, or have installed, a stem that is WAY too long ! tsk
that includes ALL types of wheels, be they steel without caps or covers, trim rings, mags of all kinds, wheel covers, etc.
to me, nothing looks worse than a valve stem sticking out in the breeze. it sticks out like a sore thumb.
i use a stem that is just enough length to be usable with whatever wheel setup is being used.
remember now, this is just my opinion. your mileage will vary.

keep in mind with trim rings they used extensions to make the valve long. The valve itself wasn't long, but an extension was threaded on the valve to extend the valve out far enough outside the ring to help make adding air with a nozzle easier.
While you are at it, if you are setting up wheels and tires for a show car, make sure your tire installer lines up the valve with the Wingfoot on the Goodyear letters on the polyglas tire. devil

Me too...from a practical standpoint they suck! Worked at a tire store in the early 80s...I remember taking many of them off due to leaks.
