That car started as a challenge to go 12.99 for $1299.
there is a lot more holes in it than that video shows.

It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.

Does anyone currently have a good source for chemical milling? I heard Dave Kalasa isn't doing it anymore.

too bad Lee went on to other places.
i miss this thread and his constant quest to shed ounces.
i wonder if he ever got his under dash wiring sorted out, and how much weight was saved there ?

Switched out my old 1050 Dominator, for a Thumper 1150, and thought it new carb felt lighter, and sure enough, 2.5lbs lighter then my old carb.

I also upgraded from a steel driveshaft, to an aluminum, and the aluminum shaft is 9lbs lighter.

Saved 4 lbs. today by switching to Lingenfelter rear bumper brackets. I switched the fronts a couple of years ago. They are a quality product if anyone is interested.

I removed 20 lbs of bondo and about 1/2 lb of pop rivets by cutting off my terrible quarter panels and welding on some new ones wink

I'm exaggerating slightly wink

It sure LOOKED LIKE 20 lbs of bondo...and there was definitely enough there to add some weight, though probably less than that exact amount.

Ideas on weight loss are great. I once worked for a guy who said 'Throw it up in the air... if it comes back down it's still too heavy.'

In the last few years I've removed a bunch of weight off my Duster.

- Removed the stock steel hood and hinges for pin-on fiberglass hood - approx. 75 lbs. Kind of a no brainer.

- Removed back seat, replaced with a low, flat platform - maybe 20 lbs total.

- Aluminum heads, approx. 45-50 lbs. Another no brainer.

- QA1 front end - supposedly 18 lbs (mostly due to aluminum strut rods)

- One Kirkey seat - maybe 35 lbs over my old buckets which were 22 lbs. each

- Removed all unnecessary wiring - maybe 5 lbs

- Generic cross flow radiator vs. Griffin "OE fit" unit, maybe 6-7 lbs.

- Stripped off undercoating - only 12 lbs. A lot of work for little gain.

- Changed Summit cast aluminum trans pan for Moroso fabricated pan - 2-3 lbs.

- Lightweight digital gauges and plastic cluster bezel - 2-3 lbs

- Moved trans cooler to rear - negligible weight savings but aids front-to-rear balance

- M/T radial front runners vs. Michelin VW radials - not sure yet but perhaps a few lbs. each

Actually added some weight back though so it wasn't all positive. I got a set of the old Mopar cast reverse-lip valve covers - those things are 7lbs each! Plus the long studs are likely triple the weight of normal ones. Added at least another 30-40lbs of weight with TTI 1 7/8" headers and 3" full exhaust. That stuff is ridiculously heavy. They flow more air than the 1 5/8 - 1 3/4 step headers but the weight penalty was tough to swallow.

Thanks. In between all that I also Swiss cheesed a couple things. Not sure if any of this made a difference but 'speed holes' are cool.

Been a while and cool to see this post back up at the top. In the last few years I have drilled out more stuff and removed enough other stuff I don't need to get my Dart down to 2867 so far with me. I have a glass dash and an aluminum steering column which should remove a bunch more and hopefully get me close to 2820 which is 200lbs lighter than my last 6.14 at 112.2 pass a few years ago. Should go easy 5's now.....fingers crossed...
