I have. Don't like to. Aren't supposed to. Drilling, reaming, tapping not easy on some of the race axles (Strange) because of hardness. If I did, it would be with a TIG. Best bet is to send the back to the manufacturer and have them done for 5/8" stuff. Wheel stud problems over.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

eek Not something I could ever see myself doing or suggesting, regarding the tack weld.

Another option for an upgrade is a 14mm stud, just slightly under 9/16", but increases tensile/clamping by nearly 20% over 1/2", or just go 5/8" and forget about it.

I have had to do that on screw in studs to keep them from unscrewing, not on press in studs, yet luck
I know guys that do spot weld their press in studs as a safety factor shruggy

Why not skip the tack weld and use a thin jam nut on the back side, that can be drilled for safety wire and/or lock-tite?

The Strange screw in 5/8 stud kits come with jams. Red loctite and forget about it. Unless you have an axle with an unusually thick flange.

My 40 spline Mark Williams Dana 60 axles with their 5/8 inch studs have thin locknuts on the backside also up
