I'm quickly approaching time to paint my car 70 Charter R/T 440 4spd FK5 paint (Been apart since 1990). I've seen many FK5 1970 cars and there seems to be a bunch of different shades. I've seen cars that lean to the copper side and seen them on the brown side. My car was painted already when I first bought is in the late 80's so there was no reel original paint to compare to. So the question is how dark is FK5 supposed to be and whats correct Copper Side Or Brown Side?

Thanks for your input

My ‘70 Challenger is FK5. It was repainted before I bought it, however the firewall appears original paint. The firewall is in fact “browner” than the rest of the car which seems to have a bit too much orange in it.
Trying to match colors with descriptions is probably not going to be the way to nail down a match, hopefully someone can suggest a supplier/formula that is correct.

Sometimes you can find original paint remnants on the inner door frame behind the door panels depending on what level the car was repainted to. Usually if the car is getting repainted the same color guys just repaint what is seen and don't go chasing down every last area on the car.

My 70 Challenger is still wearing its original FK5 if your ever near Niagara Falls and want to see it.

in 2018 I was able to get PPG DBU base in FK5 I have the formula from that but, DBU is no longer as of a couple years ago. All the PPG dealers I have talked to tell me on or two of the tints in the old formula are no longer available. We camera shot the dbu but it was not even close. Way to gold.

If it was closer I would take you up on that. I have picture of a survivor car from Carlisle in 2016. The car was under a tent it's hard to tell how dark it was.

lighting changes the color a lot & it will look different on every monitor or phone

I have a ~50 year old quart of FK5 lacquer - this is the second time I've opened it & an original paint door scoop

first set of pictures are indoor under halogen & fluorescent lighting

here is our original paint 70 dart.. the paint is crazy how it flips colors in different light. looks orange in bright sun and looks brown as it gets darker out..

Thank you to all. After several spray outs and scans I'm pleased with what I have.

Aiming for paint Memorial Day Weekend

Thanks Again!
Frank
