Any decent (no crime) clean but not too spendy motels in the area ?
Gotta run a pavement Sprint Car there in May, and would like to trust the stuff all still being there after a night's sleep.
Haven't been to CA since a Monterey Historics race weekend a few years back...and Monterey's a lot nicer than Stockton, as I recall.

You are right about that, Stockton is horrible. Hopefully someone in the area can recommend a nice safe place.

Two towns away might be better. You could always get stuck in Lodi, again...

Or end up in Porterville, “I Don’t Care”.

I haven't personally stayed in Stockton, but the few times I've been there for a Supermoto or bike course at the Little 99 Raceway make me think that you'd be running a pretty high chance of having something broken into or walking away if you left it parked too long.

If you don't mind the drive, Brentwood, CA to the west is a better option (although the back roads and little bridges that get to Discovery Bay can be tight for a trailer). If you can do it and don't mind running up the Altamont Pass, where I am in Livermore CA is also more secure.

Either way, you are adding 45-ish minutes to your commute.

This reminds me of the joke.....What do you do if you drop your wallet in San Francisco? KIck it until you get to Oakland, THEN bend over to pick it up.

A wallet on the ground in Oakland won't be yours for long.

"Oakland had the highest total crime rate of any California city with 20,000 or more people, with 8,587 total crimes per 100,000 residents."

"Stockton is one of the most dangerous cities in California. The city experiences crime twice as often as the national average and violent crimes nearly four times more than the national average. There's also high levels of gang activity, high poverty rates, and high unemployment rates in the city"

What about Modesto? I lived there in the mid-70's and heard that gangs basically took over the town years ago.

Stockton has turned into a free for all when it comes to stuff getting stolen. I would make it a day trip, then go outside the area for better accommodations. Stockton is a small town surrounded by more towns, cities and such. It would be easier and safer to find a hotel in a nearby city and just drive the extra 15-25 minutes. Lots of freeways and roads in CA, easy routes to use. I'm in San Jose and it's a little over an hours drive to get there. Hotels.com could get you got info on hotels in those areas and may have specials on promo's too. And if you have an iphone, you can use the 'flyover tour' in map settings to view the area your in.

Is Lodi not a viable option? 20 mins from the raceway more or less. Could the OP use an RV park?

Thanks for the input, folks.
Looks like it's even more grim than when I left the Bay Area in 2004.
I couldn't stand it then, with the senseless vandalism, theft, and rude, inconsiderate a-holes all around me.
Guess the best option is to carry, and avoid the area altogether, except the track.

I get your point.....MY point was that bending over in San Francisco could be MORE dangerous than in Oakland....

San Francisco was a gay mecca in the 70s and 80s but since then other cities have been more accepting of the gay community (including Oakland). Also, many people were priced out of SF and moved into Oakland.

"Oakland, which is already one of the nation's most integrated cities, has quietly become home to more lesbian couples per capita than any other big city in the nation, and ranks third for gay and lesbian households combined, behind San Francisco and Seattle, according to census data."
