Got some bids for a 30x50 building and a 50x175 rv storage building a few months ago. Had to put off the plans for 4 months. Called the contractor today and he said his business was just about dried up. He said the cost of goods had cancelled all his projects. He said one bid he did in March for 275k is now over 600k. Said it was 130% jump from his original bid.

It's not just commercial. A friend is building a new home and it's at the framing stage. It's already 20% higher than estimated and his builder says it'll go much higher. Shoot, I just bought a flat, primed, pre-hung hollow core 30" door w/no casing and paid $120. I'll bet at this time last year I could have bought that all day for $30-$40.

We're in a world market for commodities.

The US put tariffs on Canadian lumber a couple of years ago.

Now about 10% of the Chinese have passports, wait until it is 40%. Wait until they want to invest here-see Vancouver.

People with money are choosing to build not just in cities but in resort locations. The people with money want new or recently remodeled.

The number of people that want a 4000 S.F. home is pretty sizable. Discounting their ability to take care of it over decades.

Young women are becoming very fluent in the shared information economy. Many young men are comfortable in the gaming community on a couch.

When I see contractors these days, they mostly seem to be driving full sized 3/4 ton crew cabs with a wrap: $ 75K trucks. Used 1/2 ton single cabs are out. That money has to come from somewhere.

I put off building an Rv storage building because of the same problem. Everything is at least doubled in price IF it's even available.

We also wanted to do a master bath remodel this spring. Lead time on the shower is 16 weeks blush

Contractor said don't bet on the prices coming back down anytime soon. Anything else I have to say about this subject probably belongs in the unmoderated/politics forum. panic

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I returned a sheet of 1/2" AC plywood and got a sheet of 3/4" AC. The lumberyard said they were glad I had the receipt as the price of the 1/2" had risen so much in the week I had it without a receipt they wouldn't have accepted the return.

I wanted to build a 10-12,000 building. Typical "cheap" buildings in our area are block about 6-8' high then insulated steel above that. Last year $70-75/sqft. This year, I talked with the builder a month ago and he talked me out of building. Said wait for a year or buy a 20 year old 14,000ft building he had coming up for $62/ft. Said it would be way cheaper even if I had to put $100k in it. NOW he says the guy with the 3 person company in the 14,000ft building, who WAS gonna hang it up, is gonna stay at it for a few more years. DAMN.

I've seen those steel building commercial where they can put up 10,000ft for $200k but what about property (200k), sewer, electric, gas, etc. I'm not a general contractor. I would have no idea what I'd be getting into. And I'd image a general contractor has to put 20% in their pocket ($200k?). So now I'm at a million again.

THEN here in Michigan seems like EVERYONE is growing pot. Just drove through an industrial neighborhood today and that's all I smell. Buildings in pot growing areas are 2-4X what they were prior. It's NUTS. So choke out legitimate small business to get people high? This is like a bad dream I can't wake up from. I don't want to eat dog food later on in life so I don't have time to get high. I'm at work today eating PB&J for lunch while checking in on Moparts

Love to have you move your operations to North Dakota. Most of us here still have our head screwed on straight.

My next door neighbor had pole building put up 6 weeks ago by an Amish crew. The building was erected and concrete poured in 4 days time. However, they are still waiting for the garage doors to come in - and there is no solid lead time apparently! He built the building to park his RV in there - and he just has open ends right now until the doors come in. Crazy times right now.

Empty buildings here get turned into breweries, and they are all over the place. Anything with a high enough ceiling to fit the tanks in is all they need. 25-35 crowd wastes a lot of money on craft beer, vaping, and tattoos.

All my kids and their friends are in that age group. What a bunch of "scatter brains" smile They spend every penny on new car leases (my 30yo son drives a nicer, more expensive truck than I've EVER owned. My daughter a Cadillac SUV), they rent (talk about THROWING MONEY AWAY), they all eat out MOST nights (stupid me, I cook for my wife and I most nights), Lululemon (SHEESH, don't get me started), oh and trips/vacations (cause they say they "deserve/earned it"), etc.

I try to tell them to save a couple dollars. That the economy can actually get bad and they might be outta work or have their pay or hours cut. I honestly think they must be waiting for something on the order of the Tooth Fairy as a way to accumulate $. They honestly don't believe me when I tell them it takes time. You keep saving saving $100 a week. And then its $1000. Then it's $10,000. Then you put it down on crappy house so you aren't wasting money on rent. I remember telling this to a 25yo guy I worked with and he said he wanted an unrealistically expensive house as his FIRST house?!?!?! And now with legalized pot, legalized online gambling and Robinhood inspired day trading young people have 3 new ways to throw money away.

I've been slowly getting ready to build a house at some put but I'm putting any plans off for a while until things get back to normal. Same for some other projects.

Dad is putting a house up in a couple of months. Nothing fancy, just a 1200 sqft ranch and a barn. Materials inside of a year have increased the cost $50k. He's having to put off retirement now for another two years.

I just finished my dream home. 60 x 100 x 20h steel building w 1730 home,1270 showroom and 3000 garage. Just made it with lumber prices. I figured I bought at 335/1000. Total lumber was under $20K. Still waiting on stove ordered in November, estimate June now. Installing New Age vinyl floor in showroom when it comes in

Nice shop HS. I really like what LEDS have done for light design.
