Seen this thread before but 1970 challenger R/T AM only 8 track. Single mast or telescopic. Can anyone help. I think it should be telescopic. Thanks

The single piece mast did not show up until the 1972 model year.

Barry,.....did that apply to the Trans Am cars also?

I can beat this to death with info, it comes up fairly often so I looked through a lot of stuff for info. So far, it all leads to the same conclusion.....

From 1972, notice the word "new";

Thanks Barry,

But what is odd is the same antenna that you show in that post is what I removed from a junked out T/A many decades ago to install on my 71 T/A clone,

Plus I seen the solid one peice on a few AAR's and T/A's over the years,.........I don't know what is "correct",.....and if anyone would know it would be you,

Here's the only pic I have of the antenna on the rear of my T/A........I've also seen only one other Trans Am car with the large chrome benzel also, like whats on mine......I created my 71 T/A clone back in 1979,...using original T/A parts, or what FEW repro parts that were available

Note the last line of that image. The originals were prone to breakage & often replaced with the "new" style.

Here is an original still on the car, you can see how they could be a problem;

From the 1970 FSM, obviously a 31" single piece antenna could not be "extended to 40";

From the 1970 Challenger owners manual, note the wording again;

Hmmmm, 31 inches is quarter wavelength for the center of the FM band. I wonder where they came up with 40 inches for the FS manual?
I noticed in the owners manual they said to wait ten minutes for the radio to "warm up". I am thinking they did not have a lot of experience with transistors at that time. Unless the car was sitting out in the cold.... wait, maybe that is an Alaska owners manual.

If you read past the 40", you will see that they were referring to adjusting the antenna trimmer for the AM band not the FM band.

Anyone that was around in 1970 would tell you that AM was king and FM stations were scarce in most parts of the country especially where there were hills or mountains. That's why AM radios were more common than AM-FM radios.

Agree with the few FM stations in '69-'71...I had a part time job doing car stereo installations (8-track and a few FM radios) during '69/'70 era and there must have been a handfull at the most in the Pittsburgh area during that time and very limited range with the hills of Western PA. We always set the telescopic antennas to 31" when we installed an FM radio as that was already the "known" best length for FM and worked okay for AM. If you were on a hill late on Sunday night and extended the antenna fully you could get AM radio stations hundreds of miles away but FM seemed to always average at best 50-75 miles....maybe

We were blessed on the Colorado Front Range. We had several great FM stations. KLZ FM played top 40 with album cuts instead of the singles. KFML played just about everything with no rhyme or reason with DJs that sounded like they just woke up from a nap. KLAK FM played country. All of the stations were in stereo and with mountain top transmitters covered the state. That is when I learned to adjust the telescopic antenna on my 68 Fury III to 31 1/4 inches for optimum reception. Retrimmed the AM radio on a station on 1510 for best reception there. I did not listen to much AM then except on long trips.
