Found a set of 3751213 heads in a friends back yard. As I understand it, these were called 'Motor Home' heads and were supposed to have better cooling particularly around the spark plugs. Anyone know the chamber size, and do they have hardened seats? Are they worth working on or am I just wasting my time?

They are 452's with cooling hole in head near the sparkplug (steam hole), smaller 5/8" spark plug, different type of exhaust valve to handle the heat, and also special retainers on the exhaust spring.

I've seen the 213 heads with extra cooling on '73-4 motorhomes and extra cooling 452 heads on later motorhomes and highway patrol. The extra cooling around the spark plug was supposed to make the engine less likely to detonate. BTW, if the spark plug holes have a tapered seat then the heads have the extra cooling passages.

Don't these take a special water pump that bolts to the head?

some take the water pump bolted to the head, some dont. There are block-off plates that bolt on to fix that. Also some have a different exh manifold bolt pattern, cant fix that one.

These don't have the water pump bolted to them, and I see no blockoff plates, but they are 213's. So just considering them as heads, I can consider them just like 452's?

I had a set of 213s and they looked like any other passenger car BB head.

I have a pair of these with just 17K miles on them from the time they were new, so I figure they don't need a rebuild, and I was wondering if I could get by without exhaust seat inserts, and just put in new seals and replace the springs with somewhat stiffer ones. Does anyone have a spring recomendation if 6,000 RPM is all I am planning on doing? (I don't want excessively stiff springs that will cause rapid wear). In any case, with aftermarket springs I would have to get rid of the thick "rotator" exhaust valve spring retainers....would that cause any problems?

Dave

NO , the casting is flame hardened , do a valve job and or intall larger valves and the hardened area is pretty much history .

So on the 213 heads I have that have 17K original miles on them, if I DON'T do a valve job and keep every valve in it's original location, I'm safe?
