I picked up a sure grip for an 8.75 this winter, and the carrier bearings were pretty beat up. Did a poor job of measuring for new ones and ordered a set of bearings with a 2" I.D. They are too loose. Measured with an actual caliper, and the sure grip shaft is 1.96", which is a bit too big to try to press a 1.80" bearing onto. Does anyone have a part number for a Timken bearing with a 1.96" I.D. and an O.D. for a 489 case?
Thanks.

What sure-grip are you using ? Clutch or cone type will make a difference, 1.8 for the early or clutch type or 2.0 for the later cone type . I have both types here so when I get a minute today I will get you the numbers but they might be Koyo bearings. Not to sure about the 1.96 bearing though work

It's a clutch type. I bought 2.0, my buddy had some 1.8 in stock and he checked them when he pressed the old bearings off. Neither will work. I think if there is an oddball bearing/sure grip unit that was made for one year and has discontinued bearings, I will be the one that bought it.

Is there any chance the surface is sure grip is tapered after the bearing surfaces?

I fit a clutch kind (yukon) SG carrier on my 489 case and used stock bearings. Fit just like the open carrier. Never had to take care about any measurement.

After talking with Cass, we're thinking it may be a unit out of a 9.25, not an 8.75 as it was advertised at the swap meet. More to come.

Yeah, reposted with lots of the same incorrect info. Notice they list the '62-'70 B-body housings as being the same width. down

I just checked RA and the 9.25 spec is 1.969 dia and .866 w. Getting burned at the swap meet sucks. It seems like a casino or lottery more often than not.
