Need to replace my OEM Federal power steering pump on my 440 and need some recommendations on what to replace it with and where to get it from. Looked at an A1 Cardone 20-6184 and a NAPA 206184, but does it matter or is there one that is above the rest. Really do not want to change out the brackets and covert to a Saginaw. Thanks.

What is wrong with your pump? I have two Federal pumps apart. Just need a seal kit. Summit has them for $10.

As far as I know that is the correct part.

You can get a brand new Federal pump for $103. (Chinese of course)

I just did a Federal pump rebuild for the first time. It really is pretty straight forward. The only special tools needed are a snap ring pliers and a pulley puller. Advanced auto has a pulley puller tool that you can borrow (buy and return). As mentioned, the seal kit is about $10. The factory service manual has excellent step by step instructions. Mopar Muscle also did a nice how to article. Another option is to send yours off for rebuild. Steer and gear did one for me awhile back. I’ve also heard good things about these guys:

I used the Gates 351170 Power Steering Repair Kit

Here’s a post with a copy of the Mopar Muscle article. http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,69003.0.html

I rebuilt the pump a year ago. Super easy and cheap. This year the spindle on the pump, where the pulley is attached, slides back and forth into the pump. Very noticeable when the car is running. Either I did something wrong or it is worn out.

I took a couple pumps apart for comparison. On one pump I felt a pop when I was pulling the pulley off. I must have broken one of the two retaining rings on the shaft. Maybe you did too and that’s where your play is coming from?

You can see where it’s missing in the second photo.

With Fed you need to be careful not to bump the shaft(pulley) also why you can't press the pulley on, it is pulled on with the screw hole. If the shaft is bumped inward it unseats the pressure plate from the cam. The cover spring is not strong enough to reseat the pressure plate. Pump won't prime.

I have had one from NAPA on my RR since about 1993. I'm sure whoever made it or remanufactured it back then is no longer around. ijs.
