Looking for answers/ideas here. This is a short account of 3 late model 300's I've owned - all with the 3.6L Pentastar motor.

* First one I owned was a 2012 RWD. It would get 25 MPG around town, & over 31 on the highway.
* Second one was a 2014 AWD. It got around 24 around town, & 27 on the highway.
* Current one is a 2016 RWD. It gets around 24 around town, but only 25 MPG on the highway - I just checked it last week.

Something does not seem right to me. Any ideas? I knew the AWD would get worse mileage & it did, but going back to just a RWD I thought I'd get all the mileage back like I got with my 2012. Not even close.

Typically my highway mileage wouldn't exceed 24 ~ 25 MPG (rated 31 MPG) between here and Las Cruces. Tough drive, high speed, usually a head or strong crosswind across west Texas, elevations from near 5,000 ft to ~ 600 ft. I made one round trip from here to Houston on one tank, registered a perfect 30 MPG driving easy on a calm day. Around town usually got high 18's to low 20 MPG, sometimes a little better.

It's funny, my '16 Hemi WILL get the rated 25 MPG between here and Las Cruces. The wife's Hemi Durango will also get real close to its rated 23 MPG on the same drive.

They should be almost identical.

Are your mpg numbers from the on board electronics? I often wonder how accurate they are...or aren’t.

No - I calculated the MPG manually.

My 2014 Charger gets around 19mpg city/ 30mpg hi-way with the 8 spd trans. My bad city milage is due to a horrific amount of red lights on my short commute. Since your city mpg is good, I'm wondering if your trans is hitting high gear on the hi-way? Possibly torque converter not locking up? What's your rpm when cruising at 60mph? Just tossing out some ideas...

Winter fuel in Michigan has a different blend. Recheck your mileage in May. My 2013 Journey gets 24-25 highway during the winter and 28-29 during the summer when they change fuel mix. It has been this way for many years.

That is definitely a thing on my 545rfe. It won't lock up until I get it past 70mph, then back it down to 60mph and the mileage jumps way up compared to unlocked. Having to do that little stunt almost cost me a ticket in a 55mph zone. Believe it or not he let me off when I explained Chryslers "programming". I took my truck back to the Dealer to see if they can do anything about it: nope.

Have driven a few new vehicles that also don't lock up until you wind 'em past 65-70mph. mad Appreciate the programming in my '01 that locks up at 52mph every time. Makes a big difference in my fuel mileageup

The trans in this 300 has always been a little questionable to me - now you have me thinking. One thing it has ALWAYS done, is when coming to a stop, it BANGS pretty hard into the first gear - it's abrupt & harsh every time. I've always wanted to get this checked. None of my other two 300's have ever done this.

My '17 is the same.

My Charger does this as well on the odd occasion. Mine seems to happen, when doing a hard stop from some speed. I think it's only done it a few times in 2 years, so I haven't worried to much about it. I chauked it up to be too many gears, downshifting all at once.
