Whats a better choice in shifter hurst . Quarter shift ....winters or turbo action The turbo action seems to be a love hate deal with most people. I love it, I have hundreds of passes and thousands of miles with it and have never shifted 1-3. It is smooth as glass.

Couldn't agree more. Feels like no detent at all in the trans. I have to keep my hand off the shifter during launch. And that usually screws up my timing a bit on the 1-2 shift. Has anyone fixed this in the trans ? Or could you perhaps add a pretty light extension spring on linkage at the trans ? My final straw with the T/A was it doing the 1-2 shift on its own at the hit.... it solely relies on the rooster comb on the valve body as a detent and apparently the Gs on my launch was enough to allow the shifter to move. I was in the middle of trying to modify/stiffen that on my valve body when Al texted me about interest in a clean N PPP with air shift capabilities that his friend with the heads up car had acquired with the purchase of a Proflight.... I got a deal on it but I’d certainly pay full pop for one know that I’ve used it a few years.

I tried a Cheetah Shifter, I'd pull from first to third. Hated it. Went with a B&M Pro Ratchet, loved it it but the pot metal arm broke in the staging lanes. I've since fixed that...So far so good. It happened to me too. However if you don’t keep your hand on the handle when in 1st and “slap” it into second it works every time.

Amazes me that guys still use that TA shifter, but in a slower car maybe its not an issue. No question the PPP stuff is far superior IMO. Just sold another one a couple weeks ago, looks like I may have another one here soon to sell too

I agree with hand on shifter and improper shifting technique causing the problems. The TA shifter has mass above and below the pivot point which would cancel each other out when g force is applied. One day when I take one apart I will check to see where the most mass is but by looking it may be below the pivot which would have a tendency to shift to neutral with a RMVB. I have an air shifter so my hand is not on the shifter my car will go 1.18 60' and my TA has never shifted itself in thousands of passes over 28 years. Not trying to be a smart a$$ but having an air solenoid kinda makes it a moot point. The air pressure in the cylinder would make it moving on its own impossible.

I had to learn to stiffen up my right arm on all the shifters I've used in a car that would run 1.40 or quicker 60 ft. The first incident I had to make me learn that lesson was in my 1963 Plymouth M.W. bracket car that ran low 11s at LACR, I had left my hand half way relaxed on the B&M shifter on the starting line and it flew off the shifter handle and hit the roll bar over my head hurting my right hand bad enough for me to still remember that now As far as the T/A, Winters and Fairbanks type shifters shifting them self at the hit I hadn't had that happen yet or heard of it, THANKS

My car isn't super fast, it has only been a 1.41 60ft as a best. But, never shifted on its own and I don't even see how I could go 1-3 unless pulling the shifter towards the passenger side when I shifted?

I like the Hurst 1/4 stick. I have them in two of my own cars and the Camaro I drive for a friend.

I like Cheetahs for a street car. I think they have a cool look to them. I sometimes see people using the wrong gate with them, and that causes issues. Some people (i think unknowingly) use the air shift gate and shift by hand. that would make it real easy to jump from 1st to 3rd. https://www.turboaction.com/shifters.html for drag racing would not be my first choice. The hurst quarter stick in my opinion is an excellent functioning shifter in reverse manual in a drag car. You really can't screw up with one. I really think they are the best functioning for street strip. Very easy to go from third to 1st/Neutral. PPP are hands down the best in my opinion for air shift and full time drag car. The clean neutral setup if that's what you need works great on a PPP. The quality of the cables, brackets etc, are top notch. I like using it in a manual shift application, but honestly i thought the quarter stick was easier to use on the street where you regularly go up and down through the pattern. PPP is more costly when you buy all the components. But i think they also look the coolest.

I always used the PPP shifters. My new M&M arrived today. Thing arrived with a small bag of M&M’s LOL! Definitely a nice piece. Will see how it works soon enough.

Can you use the M&M on a 727? Their website only shows Powerglide and T400 in the listings.
I am in the market for a shifter for my S/S car before someone tells me to ditch the 727... I contacted M&M about a year ago asked if they would build one for a 727. I wish they did, seems like it would be pretty easy to add a few more shift patterns to their lineup. At the time they had no interest / plans for a 727. Don't know if anything changed but it doesn't look like it. I thought about trying to adapt a M&M shifter but my understanding is there is a different length of throw between park and reverse so it wouldn't work.
