Apparently the dude bought it, loaded it, lost it. I'd be curious how far he got.

Looks like trailer sway got him? No doubt - that's why I'm wondering how far he got. Now that I think on it, can't decide which would be worse - first mile or last.

Exactly how is that car a “score”?
'67 is an abbreviation of 1967 67' is an abbreviation of 67 feet They are not interchangeable.

Looks like trailer sway got him? Low Riders have a trunk full of batteries ! All that rear weight overhanging from that short trailer made it impossible to control at speed. It started swaying and it was over !

I've towed a b-body with those u-haul rental trailers a couple times and never had any trouble. I always thought they loaded and towed surprisingly well. As long as he got the front wheels all the way forward he should not have had an issue?

Reminds me of the time I borrowed my buddy's truck with his fifth wheel utility trailer to haul REALLY long power poles home. First bump I hit in the road, trailer bounced and lifted the truck's front wheels off the ground ...drove really slow from there.

Just looking at the vehicle - all the battery weight is in the ass end of the car and there is less weight on the trailer tongue. As soon as he hit 50 MPH I bet you he crapped his pants as that trailer started whipping back and fourth.

Probably better but the overhang would have made turns tough.

Trailer sway without a doubt. I towed an '01 Dakota ClubCab 4x4 home from NC behind my '06 2500 on a UHaul trailer. I wound up using backroads to get back as when I hit 55 it would start to sway. Add in the trunk full of batteries as mentioned and I don't imagine he got very far unless he was an absolute idiot and kept pushing it. Tim

Tim So, just curious - what are the loading strategies to avoid sway? Is the goal to have the load balanced on the trailer so the hitch isn't loaded much, or is *some* load on the hitch better to plant the rear tires? ..maybe there are different solutions to different situations? I've towed a few things in my lifetime, and I know what sway can feel like. But my loads and the trailers I used were fairly "ordinary" - construction site office trailers, boats, building materials, etc. - Art

If you have a car on this type of trailer and can lift the trailer tongue up when loaded, you don't likely have enough tongue weight. Generally, in this case, you want anywhere from 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight on the tongue. He should have had 350-500# of tongue weight. With the car having batteries in trunk, should have loaded it backwards and maybe even kept it jacked up for clearance. Then there are the ones that it starts swaying and they just keep legging it out at 65-70+... nothing wrong there. I see the opposite end all the time when the desert guys drag rigs out to sand dunes. Explorers/Tahoes/suburbans/PU's looking like they are popping the front tires off the ground being overloaded and TOO much tongue weight. They go ditch hunting quite often. Still hammering along at 60+ most of the time.

Wonder if opted for the insurance? When you rent a u haul trailer they ask you what you are driving and what are you towing to see if it's acceptable. I'm sure the software that figures that out didn't know about the 500 pounds of batteries in the trunk. I was wondering about insurance on the car itself. First thing I do when I buy a car is get insurance. Before picking it up or having it shipped, whatever. Not worth saving the money for a few days of insurance. As far as the trailer goes, he's probably covered with his vehicle. but I'm no so sure about the load. May become a civil case in court if he exceeded the load limit of trailer.
Facts are stubborn things.

In this specific case the best strategy would have been to take the batteries out of the back of the car and put them in the bed of the truck.

Wheel base of the tow vehicle can be a factor in trailer sway. Tongue weight and load balance obviously matter. I suspect what nails most people is over speed, not paying attention and not expecting sway or not knowing how to react. I don't tow often but when I do I keep in the granny lane. How long the trip takes is way down the list of priorities vs keeping it out of the ditch. Kinda like winter driving.
