Any idea of where to find a fan belt that fits down into the groove on the pulleys? I have a 15460 on there now and the length is good but it rides high in the pulley.

I have a 383 and I only have an alternator.

Thanks

I used to know what the numbers mean, but the parts house should.
I think it is the last 2 numbers, it indicates how wide the belt is.
you should be able to go to a real parts guy and step down a belt thickness and get it to ride down.

The #s are length & width - different manufacturers put either # first.
Learned that working at a parts store.
I too don't recall exactly what they mean, but if you measure one it'll become obvious.

15 is the width, 460 is the length.

15/32" wide
46.0 inches long

Why do you think it is too wide?

As far as I know they are suppose to ride near the top of the pulley.

The standard belts available do seem to ride high in the groove in the alternator pulley.

Our 69 Dart 383 GTS has a tendency to spin those off.

The belt that sits deeper in the groove is a DAYCO Top Cog belt.
It doesn't spit them off at the track.

It's not a correct looking belt though if you want a factory looking belt.
Many belts have what look like teeth (cogs) on the inside of the belt, on the Top Cog those are on the outside.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Flush with the top or slightly above the pulley.

The belt riding towards the bottom of the pulley is usually bad news. The belt is suppose to drive the pulley from the sides of the belt, when the belt is low in the pulley, it often is trying to drive off the bottom of the pulley groove and will slip.

Yep it’s 46”. I remembered from my days of selling belts at the hardware store that the first digits were the width. It just seems to be awe fully high. It seems like there used to be a 14 width that was available.

I run a dayco topcog 15470 on my hemi. It's the only belt that it won't throw off. 15440 on power steering belt.

The Dayco Top Cog sits fully down in the groove on the pulleys on our Dart with the 451 stroker in it.
It cured it throwing the belt off. twocents

The 15--- belts are too wide. All of the Mopars back in these days used the narrow 13--- series belts. The belt is not supposed to stick up out of the pulley at all. All of the belt manufacturers quit making almost all of these narrow-CORRECT 13 series belts back in the early to mid 90's. GM used these narrow belts also. Ford used the 15--- belts mostly, some 17's. Mopar used the wide 17 belts on the single belt AC compressors on 69 and earlier smallblocks and both big and small block certain power steering pumps. Your Hemi that you have the 15440 shows me you don't have the right pulleys or the original power steering pump. All Hemis from 1967 to 1971 used the wide 17395 power steering belt. Probably 90% of vintage Mopar owners today have the wrong belts on their car. You have to use what you can get I guess. The Mopar belts that your local Chrysler dealer had hanging on the wall back in the day were the best premium belts that you could buy!
