Son is looking for a new DD and wants to stay with the 3rd gen Dakota (or 2nd gen depending on your outlook ). Not finding much info on them other than they apparently are a V6 version of the 4.7? True? Problems? Finding some clean, low-mile '04s and the '05-up and wanted to find out about them. Thanks. Tim

same problems as any 07 and older 4.7s except very low on power in a truck of any sort, hypothetically the chain set up should last very slightly longer as there is 4 less valves to open but no much better in real life. Changing oil in my 04 3.7 dakota right now, it is very low on power even with a 5 speed, they were weak when brand new.

Thanks, Dave. Looks like he'll have to find a 3.9 or 5.2/5.9. Tim

Just curious - what did they change about the 3.7 in '04? I have an '02 truck with a 3.7 in it.

Personally I wouldn't own a 3.7 (or a 4.7). A buddy bought a low mileage 2008 Dakota with a 3.7 with 60K miles on it a little over a year ago. It seemed to be a good clean low mileage truck, at 66K miles it broke a vale spring and dropped a valve. I've never heard much good about either the3.7 or the 4.7 engines. Everyone that I've known that has one has had problems with them.
Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

Too many problems, too little power. There are better choices out there.
