I have a 470 that has been sitting ready for assembly for some time. It is a 10 to 1 pump gas engine. cam is a 256/260 solid roller .630 lift. Harland sharp rockers full time oiling with .050 restrictors. I am considering putting this together for a buddy so he can get to cruise nights etc. street car. 4 speed 69 barracuda. My question is. My pan and external pickup I have put back for this engine will not work in his car. Can I get away with the 6 quart mancini a body pan, standard volume oil pump and 3/8 pickup?. I also would like to run the melonized gear to keep his maintenance as easy as possible. I do not have enough material in this block to feel comfortable going to a 1/2" pickup tube. I know rpm and bearing clearance plays into it. I can limit the rpm. Galen

I sound like a broken record on this subject but I ran a 3/8 pickup on my 451/472 and would run it to 7k running 10.30-10.50, for years in my Coronet. Dedicated racecar. Same issue as you, not enough meat in the block due to a previous stroke clearance. That was my experience.

I use a 3/8' pick up in my 511, goes 7100 thru traps no issues. I did ream it out with a slightly bigger drill bit. It had a step of some kind inside it. I took it out making the inside of the tube a bit larger.

I use the stock mopar OEM 1970/71 440 6 pack 6 quart oil pan and 3/8 pickup in my old pump gas Duster that went 9.993 at 134.+ MPH in the 1/4 mile cork up at 3450 Lbs. on Oregon 91 octane pump swill crossing the finish line at 7000 RPM shifting between 7000 and 7300 RPM on every run up
The motor needs a certain amount of oil to live, most BB Mopar oil pumps provide way more volume than needed and the oil pump bypass is open most of the time dumping oil pressure back through the bypass valve shruggy
