I converted from the sealed beam headlight to the halogen capsule bulbs on my 68 Dart. I drove it to work the other day (5 am) and about halfway there I noticed my headlights weren't on. Neither high or low beam lights worked. I pulled the headlight later that day to find that both bulbs had exploded (they were Hella bulbs, plugged into the stock wiring with a relay conversion). There are two fuses in line, a 20 amp and a 30 amp, neither fuse had blown. I can only think of hitting a fairly hard pothole, maybe the impact killed them? Any ideas on what to check? Also the inside of the housing is foggy now, what's the best way to clean it out? See attached pics. Thanks!

You didn't happen to touch the bulbs with your fingers did you? No, I know better

How long ago did you do the conversion? About 5 years ago.

If you already have an H4 housing you might want to give LED headlights a try. Superbrightled.com carries them.

Possible voltage spike due to overcharge? If that happened wouldn't my fuse go first?

This is a common occurrence. Its nothing you did, just the price you pay for retrofitting a better design in an antiquated housing. Halogen bulbs need to be sealed from the atmosphere outside the housing. Usually a dielectric greased seal against the housing and bulb will prevent this, but I've found the higher intensity and whiter light bulbs have a very short life expectancy.
Only use a warm soapy water solution to clean the housings, and clean them submerged in the warm solution. Grab a bendable tube cleaning brush with soft nylon bristles. Works great. I bought Hella housings designed for the h4 bulb. I also live in Phoenix, and the car never sees the little rain we do get. It was a little colder than usual that morning though, maybe there was some condensation. But for both bulbs to go at once?

I put 2012 Jeep Wrangler headlamps (using relays) in my '71 Dart GT. It is a bolt in, but you will need to the donor wiring connector shell. Now that's what I call using your head. Nicely done.

Thats the same question I posed to myself when I put a set of super bites in my neon. I was less than an 1/8 mile from work and selected my hi beams, they momentarily lit and both went out. I switched back to my low beams and pulled into my spot and then the low beams failed. The same thing has happened to my wife's pontiac at least 3 times.
