Hi Team,

Wanted to get some opinions on my converter now that I had a chance to get my car to the track yesterday afternoon. Ran a 10.78 at 124. Plymouth Cuda, weighing in at 3264 with me in it. 3.23 gears, 275/60/15 tire. My gear vendors OD was not working which I think would have helped, but I have to wait a few weeks for my new one to show up. My converter should be a 3500 stall, but it was a rebuild so who knows how good of a job it was. I'm currently looking at a triple disc from a local company in Florida, FTI. It's pricey, so wanted to get some opinions prior to ordering. I can supply data logs from my run if needed from the Holley Sniper. Can also post a link to youtube if that's allowed from the Dragy video so you can hear the engine.

When I had the car dyno'd he mentioned that it was hard to get a reading and stated that the converter felt very loose, it slipped a lot, but not to judge a car from the dyno but rather drive it and make a decision there. Driving it, it feels good, but does slip easy and quickly, and almost feels like it's too much especially in third gear without the OD. There is no need to downshift it on the highway, just whack the throttle and the car instantly builds RPMs. At the track it hits the 6500 limiter pretty quick in 1st and second gear. All shifts take it from around 6400 ish to 5800. in third gear it seemed to hit 5800-5900 but never went past that and kind of just slowly built speed. I believe it should pull harder, maybe my heads are limiting air flow (eddy RPM ported)? But it's making 10-11 PSI on the logs and just sitting at that RPM, I'd think the boost would help force the air past any head restriction at this power level, but I'm certainly not a expert. I also believe the OD will greatly help here, but wanted to get opinions if the converter is stalled too high with the engine power. It was built when the car had around 450hp. Now it's 700ish.

Thanks for your feedback

My old pump gas Duster went 10.60s at 124.+MPH the first time out weighing 3450 Lbs. with me in it through the 3.0 exhaust and air cleaner on. I had a custom 10 inch Continental converter made for it off the engine dyno sheets(612 HP at 5500 RPM with 644 Ft. Lbs. at 4500 RPM), that converter would only foot stall 2300 RPM in first gear before pushing the front tires through the beams. I later broke it at the track and replace with a Turbo Action 8 inch SS/AH converter that drove much easier on the street and at the track and made my car go .2 ET quicker and 2.+ MPH in the 1/8 mile boogie
My message is get the best converter you can get, Call Paul Forte at Turbo Action and have him make a converter for your car now if you can scope
I have one customer that I got a FTI drag race only converter and Powerglide for his S/P bracket car and it works okay but they got sold after I bought that one and I don't know how good they are now confused

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Thank you for the feedback. I'll talk to both places. I like that FTI is local to me, and offer a free re-stall if it's not matched perfectly.

You really need a driveshaft speed sensor to answer that question. The Sniper doesn't have an input for driveshaft speed which is too bad. If it had an input you would be golden.

FWIW...FTI has a good reputation around here. A friend of mine that has a pretty fast Nova and has raced for years recently got a converter from them and is very happy w/ it.
Adding 250 hp and who knows how much torque is definitely gonna loosen up the converter. Get one built for your combo.

BillR1212- I recently went through the same thing. I switched my car from a NA 430 to a NA 5.7(345) Hemi and then added a Torqstorm supercharger to the 5.7 Hemi. My converter used to flash to 4800 with the 430 and then was flashing to 5400 with the 5.7 with the supercharger. The converter also showed 27% slippage at the 1/4 mile. I had the converter reworked by Ultimate Converter Concept and I picked up 6 mph in the 1/8 mile. Ultimate Converter was very easy to work with and the converter is performing great, showing 7% slippage in the 1/4.

Thanks for the feedback guys - I did call FTI - the guy on the phone commented that if I was seeing a 7-800 drop in RPMs on my shifts then I I might be okay. He said a 1000 is perfect scenario, and 800 is good. With that said, I'm having a hard time believing mine is good.I did like that he wasn't trying to hard sell me, makes me feel good that they're not just looking for business. I"ll also point out that prior to the supercharger I was seeing 1400 RPM drop in shifts and had a much longer 2nd gear pull. As Andy pointed out, I can't know for sure without drive shaft data. I may order the converter anyways just so I can rule out any issues there.
