Easy fix. Drill each and every end of the crack, v it out with a grinder, clean it, heat it, and stick weld it with nickel rod. Done.

When you say race block, how much HP is the goal? Myself personally have seen too many bad outcomes from pushing a substandard engine block. Any engine I build over 600HP preferably gets an after market block. Or an OEM block with filler and good maincaps and girdle. If I was going to use it, I would do a block fill with moroso block filler or similar product. The next question is how and why did it crack? Was it from freezing? or did it do this in a race car? I had a 440 block crack like this, with filler in it already, and the cylinder wall were barrel shaped when I took it apart, so in other words the cylinders swelled and pushed out the side of the block. If from freezing, how round are the cylinder bores? It was in a low HP street car a guy had bought, I'm sure it froze at some point before he got it. I would use it for an NHRA Stock 383 so the HP would be in the 475-500 range, the cylinders are .300" + thick which makes it a better block than the standard block I have filled now that I'm getting ready to machine over the winter. I have been using Halco machine grout for about 30 years now, it does not expand, I have taken many samples when filling a block and put them in everything from a plastic cup to a spay can top. The cylinder condition is unimportant as I'll be boring it at least .125" over.

Any repair may or may on work. Why take a chance, water may start to leak while on a pass and you crash or take the person in the other lane out. I’d use a different block. I agree it may or may not work but it wont leak much if it does with block filler past the cracks so that's not a concerne. The best block for this to make good power is the 361 truck, a sleeved 400 or an unbored 400 which I have but am saving for the Superstock 383. I can sleeve a 400 but it's a slow tedious job with my old boring bar and a sleeved block would take some time to settle to it's new state.

Have someone repair the cracks as John suggested. Just filling it with the cracks as they are, the cracks will get longer and longer. How much RPM are you going to turn it?

I would fix it by welding it. And pressure test it before filling. Thing could be cracked other places. Get someone who knows what they are doing. S/SS engine guys know people to weld iron parts.
You have to fix it. Unless something has changed, the only legal aftermarket alternative for that application is a Bulldog. They are heavy and I don't know if they are obtainable. Is the main webbing/bottom of the block any heavier on that truck block?
Call RAM in Virginia. He fixed up a stock block 383 Stocker engine for a friend which seems to be doing fine. Bub Whitaker at Burtonsville Machine is another guy who has some Mopar class cars out there.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

From my experience w/ a similarly cracked 440 block...I'd drill the ends, V it out, have it welded up, then fill it.

If you have a crack in the water jacket like shown and put block filler in it is it really water tight I remember doing it on my brothers Chevy block and it leaked.. this was about 20 years ago.. is it better now days.. I remember using Moroso block filler.. I've used it to fill a block but I didnt have any cracks to start with

Likely still have to use some type of sealer in the water.

From experience I can tell you that Block filler (HardBlock) will not prevent water from weeping through those cracks. If you plan on filling no matter what, then I would pin the ends and used wicking grade Loctite on the cracks. This has worked and held pressure in similar attempts.

I had a 440 block with similar cracks I filled the block with the Moroso block filler past the cracks and it still seeped. Another alt. is to use loc&stich pins. I have used them several times with success.

Do the stitch weld thing? Start before the crack and drill and plug overlapping each plug till past the crack. The block will be stronger than before the crack. This technique was done on every cracked train boiler for many decades to hold past 300 psi. Could use ‘flex seal’ lol I talked with a guy in Mich about a ceramic sealer he uses after fixing cast iron blocks, he swears by it.

I've never tried the stitch pin method, but I've heard that works well. On 2nd thought, I'd try that before I welded it.
