A guy I know is looking at a 1969 road runner and is telling me it is an original 440 4bbl. He did not get a pic of the vin tag to show me. He is not a “Mopar” guy per se. but he likes this RR and is thinking of buying it. I have already given him the vin codes and placements of numbers. I was under the impression the 440-4bbl was not offered for the RR in 1969. Only the A12 6 Bbl.

So, did they offer a 1969 RR with 440-4bbl?
Thanks

No. IIRC 1970 was the first year for the 440 4bbl in a Roadrunner.

and those are only in a '70 Superbird - NO 440-4bbl in a RR except the 1972-'74 cars that are badged as both RR&GTXs

A very common swap, but not factory installed in the 68-70 models except for Superbirds, period.
As soon as a seller starts telling stories, it pays to check everything very carefully before buying.

What is the 5th character/letter in the dash VIN? It should be only one of 3 letters for a '69 Road Runner H=383, J=426, and M=3x2 6bbl 440

Have him write down or photo or get a rubbing of the fender tag, as well as the VIN.
Then we can better determine what he's really looking at.
It's already an engine swap (if it's really a 440-4 in there).

Yes, thanks. I’m awaiting the info from him. Hopefully soon.

Could be a GTX instead of a RR

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Maybe it’s not actually a 440 but a 383 instead. I wonder if he knows how to identify a 440? Need to get a photo of the top of the motor to the right of the distributor as you look from the front.

Thanks for the replies. I have armed my friend with all the information and what and where to look for all the stampings to validate what is there. I haven’t heard back yet from him. I don’t think he was able to check it out in person yet. I will post when i find out. Thx again.
