Good Day to all and Happy Easter

Poking around ebag, I'm finding these 'deals' on computer chips for late model Chryslers.

These adds hype the horsepower and mileage that you will supposedly gain by install one of these silicon marvels.

As I'm an 'old school' type (still running points on the 71 Charger). I know next to nothing about 'modern' electronics.

The only reason I'm asking is that the wife has a 2006 Town/Country with the 3.8. The van gets on average 20 mpg. would it be worth it to install one of these gizmos? What is the down side to this?

Thanks to all who respond.

got a link?

But based on two words you mentions "Ebay" and "hype" I'd say save your money.

Generally they add a little more timing and more fuel under heavy load... and require upgrade to premium fuel. There have been a few controlled tests - some do work as advertised some don't.

More timing means less margin for detonation if you get a poor tank of gas or really hot day.

For a DD I wouldn't mess with it. Keep it stock and run regular. For a hobby car I would (and have) used them... I picked one with known results though.

You gotta have a link to look at. Some of those "Ebay chips" are nothing more than a gizmo to defeat the temp sensor and fool the computer into thinking the engine is cold. So it richens up the mixture some and mileage takes a dump.

As far as I know no one makes a real "chip" for a Mopar minivan with the 3.8.

While you're at it you could buy some of those magnets that align the fuel molecules for better milage. They work just as well. Don't forget to get a tornado gizmo for even more milage. Yopu get enough of these goodies on the car and you will fill the tank while you drive. LOL

I have one of those chips on my Diesel. I have a ton more power but milage is down. A friend bought one for his ferd gas pick up. Hated it and returned it within a week. No extra power to speak of and lousy milage, pinged with 89 octane gas. IMO Not worth the money on a daily driver. I have used Edge, superchips (both on gas and diesel) and hyperchips. Not worth it. Maybe on a diesel but not on gas.

depends on who makes the chip, if it is a jet chip or a hypertech tuner then they might be worth it but it will require premium fuel. If it is not made by either jet, hypertech, sct or mopar then it is just hype and not worth it.

Nobody makes anything for the minivans. What he's looking at is one of those 'chips' that messes with the readings from either the coolant temp sensor or the intake air temp sensor. They don't work and are a waste of time and money.

Now the programmers like the ones you'd want to use on a diesel, yeah they have a real benefit. They are not worth it on a gas jobber unless you are using them to recalibrate for other mods to the engine like cam, exhaust, intake, etc.
