Hoping to get some advice on my current garage. It is ugly but it was here when I bought the house.

The current garage is 19'x42' the ceiling caps out at around 7 1/2ft so it is not a great layout. I am going to keep the existing end of the garage and make it standard parking for cars 2 cars and the rest of the building will be for storing 4 wheelers, lawn tractor and classic cars.


I want to add a 18x24ft addition on the end.

Questions:

1. I plan on covering the metal walls with 1"x10" lumber to clean up the look outside.

2. I want to put a new metal roof on the garage. Can I add 2x4 to the existing metal and attach the metal roof to the roof to the existing building.

3. Any advice on making the addition look good. I am going to for 12ft walls on the new addition and also a 10ft door.

What is your lot size and the build-able area on the lot given all setbacks requirements? If you do not know ask your city or township for these distances. The last thing you want to do is spend time planning something you cannot follow thru on.

Just looking at the picture, I would build a reverse gable structure making your building a "L" shape. You can boost the height to get plenty of clearance for anything you want to pull in.

Looks like the roof is wavy and is sagging, or maybe that is just the metal? Might need to strip it and re-sheath it.

New roof over the old one adds weight so depending on how it was built that may not be wise.

If the new addition plugs into the side of it with taller walls you'll need a roof with less slope to it.

Look better? Add some high windows down the sides to let light it. You could also add a masonry wainscot to the outside perimeter.

For the roof I'd removed the old tin and inspect the condition of the boards to which the tin is fasten to. If these are old and soft I'd replace them. No sense in putting on new tin roof on if the boards aren't going to be able to hold the fasteners for the lifespan of the tin.

Better have that existing building inspected before you get too far with your plans. My guess is that it is shot but I could be wrong. As said above, next step would be to carefully review what the city (or county) will let you do. You might not have many options depending on what the codes say.

Vinyl siding would really make an improvement, once you have all the fundamentals taken care of.

I had almost the same thing on my property when I bought it . .asked a few , all said tear it down and build new .. one good bump with backhoe it fell down like a house of cards .. beware the price of lumber right now, its very,very high

Yes the metal is wavy but the building is solid. My preference is to tear it down and build a new one but it is not in the budget right now. I am trying to shore this one up for another 4 years. I am going to build a new garage after the house is paid off.

Metal roof since I cannot add any weight to the existing structure the metal will be the lightest upgrade I can do.

What's on the other side of the metals walls and roof? It's probably better to tear it off and attach your new material to that instead of putting it over the metal even if's only meant to last a few years.

Trying to cover a metal wall with wood is going to be problematic. The profile of the metal prevents you from getting the wood fastened securely. I'd pull the old metal off and re-metal. As for the roof, Trying to use furring strips over old metal will be an exercise in futility due, again, to the profile of the metal. If the base structure is sound, strip the old metal off and install new metal here also. Just my
