what's your budget and how much work do you wanna do?
I took a low compression 2bbl 383 from a C-body, dropped a 440 source kit in it, making it a ".010 under 440 in a low deck block"
10.5 compression, RPM intake, OOTB eddy heads, 750HP carb, and a XE275HL hydro cam, for a fairly easy and mild 500 hp, 535 lbs torque.
total cost was probably 5-6K?
or you could go budget build, get new pistons or zero deck the block, get compression up to 10.0:1 or so with stock iron heads, cam, etc. and still make an easy 400-450HP with the stock stroke 383

Well the 400 is like a bored 383 and my son runs a stock stroke 400. Here is his combo: Stock balanced shortblock with 383 steel crank and it has KB pistons. Eddy RPM heads milled to get 10.6 comp with the KB pistons. MP .557 cam and Isky ductile iron rockers. Eddy RPM intake with 750 DP. Stock Mopar dist we curved with MSD 6A box and we run total timing at 36 with no ping running on 93 pump. CPPA 2" headers with 3" exh system. It is in my sons 72 Dart that weighs 3550 with him in the car. With 3.91's he has run 11.40's @ 117 and its a street car he drives to the track.
