The 400 engine (383 with bigger bore); how does it stand up to performance mods? Is it a good engine to build?
Thanks!
Thats what my 512 is. 400 block (1976) .040 over and stroked. Solid roller 14.5 to 1 comp. victor heads. It should be back from machine shop this month finally hopeing to make 700ish hp. I have 2 more (1974 and 1978) that I may do if I like the results from this one.

I just happen to know a guy that has a fresh .040 over 400 block: decked, squared, line honed, ARP main studs, up for grabs if any-one's interested....?????
Rickster Humor me I'll bite
No secret, it's been sitting at Dram's shop....it's not a 230 block, but it does have the thicker web at the mains and sonic check'd fine....I'd sell it if anyone's looking for a good block...????

Okay, I'm convinced it's a good engine. This one came out of a '73 pickup. If using 440 pistons, what bore is required? Thanks!
The trick is not the bore size, the machinist will measure the pistons and bore accordingly. The trick is the right compression height piston, they varied in different years.

My 451 has a 400 block. I love 440s but there are certain things about the 400 that I like more. The 400 definitely takes up less space underhood and gives more room for big headers, tall intakes, etc.

If you're going to run a 400, it's worth it to find an RB crank & work with the 3.75 stroke. 451's can make stupid power for the simple combo that they are. Off the shelf pistons are available and inexpensive from KB (no more $$ than a stock 400 piston). It will cost a little extra to have the crank mains & counterweights turned down, but you'll thank yourself the first time you mash the loud pedal!

If your going to spend money on this motor go all the way, put a 4.25 stroker kit in it from 440 source or one of the other providers of those kits. Make sure and get one with forged pistons and the compression you will need for the application, street only, street and strip or race only I built one of these combinations before the kits where availble, 4.25 stroke with a 4.375 bore, custom Ross forged psiton with 9.25 to 1 compression ratio, portedwith big valve "906" heads and a six pak intake. that combination made 612 HP at 5500 rpm and 644 ft. lbs. torque on CA pump gas in 2004 on a DTS engine dyno in Ontario, CA The bad thing about a combination like that is once you get use to it you have to use and abused it regularly

Some will end up above the deck. If I remember right, I used stock, low compression replacement .060 over pistons that ended up .008 in the hole. I think it worked out to be .038 over on the 400.

400 block, 383 crank, 6.535" rods, Ross pistons, Comp Cams roller, 440-1C heads, fuel injection on alcohol = 7.94 @ 168 mph. Next step will be to drop in a 4.25" stroke crank and wake it up some more!
