I use a MP/ World Hemi block with the MP 6qt (1970 type) oil pan and pickup as recommended in the block instruction sheet. Pickup would fit fine if the pan was 3/8" deeper. Since this parts combination is common and used in many crate hemis I guess the problem has occured before. What is the tried and tested solution?

This won’t help you, but it’s a serious question......

Did MP actually build and sell and complete crate Hemis built from the World style block?

First make sure that you actually have the correct pan and pickup. Parts man could have thought all Hemi pickups are the same or all 70 pans are the same and substituted something he had in stock.

If they are correct then it would not be the first time I had to tweek a pickup.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.
