I hope you prepared yourself for the "You are going to go to Federal prison if you remove the VIN tag" replies that you're going to get.

If you have the dash frame out the best way to remove those rivets is to grind the underside of the rivet off and push the rivet out from underneath. If you try to drill them the bit will grab the rivet and spin it leaving a nice round spot on your vin plate showing they have been drilled.

Benefit of the doubt, may God defend me...
Yup, go in from the underside, grind the flange off with a small dremel.
I do that to refinish a dash, as there's no perfect alternative that I know.

Now I'm an accomplice ! laugh2

So there's a round spot... maybe touch up the paint on the plate? whistling

Or does it even matter... if the VIN matches the core support and the trunk lip? shruggy
My plate looks like that (PO drilled them out, most likely) and I bought the "correct" rosette rivets to reinstall it. Police that did the ID/OD (identification number and odometer reading) had no problem with it.

Always best to grind from the back, done it a dozen times, once with the dash still in the car and the windshield in because a previous owner had rubbed all the paint off it cleaning the dash too many times! Had to take the windshield out when I reinstalled it

If you are taking it off, go ahead and redo it, not hard and looks so much better.

ok'

grind the rivits off if you must !

when i changed dash pads i went to the back side with a plyers after making sure the nail head was punched out .

squesed the rivits several times till it would push out the original hole .

put them in the new dash pad and used the nail from another rivit and re spread the end just to tighten them special reebits .

removed the nail ad still have the correct look !

saved cost of new ones !

Very important - don't forget to put some tape across the plate and rivets, to prevent the rivet heads from popping out and rolling to some unreachable spot.
